I see education and school as serving to regenerate, stabilise, and progress the local area,” said Dr Heap, education consultant. “This then brings about both the enhancement of the quality of life of local people whilst simultaneously enhancing their employment prospects, education and skills of people, and the promotion of the equality of opportunity. In these times of the global Covid-19 pandemic, I am pleased to have been able to work alongside many caring and compassionate educators and administrators, and will continue to offer the services of my networks for free, throughout the summer of 2020.”

Dr Heap added further description to the services he provides. “I have provided solutions to schools for continual improvement of local education initiatives, rigorous program evaluation and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, HR processes and internal school systems. With my assistance, we have established effective timelines and allocate resources to achieve strategic goals many organisations’ Boards. My networks have engaged and motivated various stakeholders: volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organisations and even investors. I continue to help develop, coordinate and implement curriculum plans and internal monitoring procedures for schools. I have also helped expand local revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing and extracurricular operations. Furthermore, our skills with reviewing and analysing performance data have provided many organisations with guidance on improvement methods for staff CPD.”

Dr Heap concluded, “As a school leader, manager, consultant and scholar, I foster an ethos within schools that is conducive for working in partnerships. Lifelong learning itself is about progression and partnership. I use my experiences to ensure that a common message is sent out to all members of the community that surround schools: that learning is life long, enjoyable and fun, a personal investment, and a worthwhile social activity. Second WebClip2Go video production system to be installed at TU Delft

Second WebClip2Go video production system to be installed at TU Delft

VEENENDAAL, The Netherlands, 2020-Mar-28 — /EPR Education News/ — WebClip2Go is proud to announce that it is in the process of delivering and installing a second video production system at the Delft University of Technology, just six months after delivery of their original system. This means that Delft now joins the ranks of Leuven and the Erasmus University Rotterdam as a two-unit WebClip2Go organization.

The enthusiasm with which the first system was received within the university’s audiovisual department provided clear motivation and justification for the purchase of a second system, which will be installed at its Aerospace Engineering faculty.

“Quite simply, teachers have found the WebClip2Go system very beneficial for their teaching load”, said Michel Beerens, Head of the NewMedia Centre at the Delft University of Technology. “Teachers like the system because it’s incredibly easy for them to use, the production values are exceptionally high, and it delivers a teaching resource that can be used again and again – making for more efficient content delivery.”

The WebClip2Go system is a completely unique approach to the production of presenter-based video content – turning conventional approaches to editing and filming on their head, and allowing non-professional users to create professional-level content.

Essentially, the workflow process associated with traditional production is reversed. An easy-to-use system allows for the creation of professional-level ‘templates’ – including all the transitions, animations, titles, colour grading, sound FX, and animated elements that you would expect.

e-learning startup Class 101 opens new platform dedicated specifically to international learners

SEOUL, Korea, 2020-Mar-16 — /EPR Education News/ — “Do you love what you do?”

This is one of the most-asked questions of our time. For many, the easy answer is to tell someone to take their hobby and turn it into their profession. But this is easier said than done.

E-learning platform, Class 101, is working to achieve its mission of “Living What You Love” by offering immersive online video classes across a variety of hobby categories including illustration, digital drawing, music production, crafts and more. Each course is carefully created by a top-trending artist or influencer in their field with a growing community of 10,000+ creators teaching classes that consistently maintain a 98.5% satisfaction rate.

This Seoul, South Korea-based start-up recently announced its global launch for English and Japanese-speaking learners after weeks of testing the global demand for a more comprehensive form of online learning. Starting from February 2020, they opened a new platform dedicated specifically to international learners with an initial 12 classes in three categories that include illustration, digital drawing and music with many more classes to come. In a short amount of time, the total number of students enrolled in the US alone exceeded 1,500.

Some of the most popular courses are instructed by influential artists including Korean hip hop singer Gray and Groovyroom. These music producing and beat-making classes have been especially popular amongst K-pop fans across the globe. An art class taught by ZIPCY was also popular amongst students who wanted to learn realistic and sophisticated drawing styles from an instafamous Korean Illustrator.

“We decided to announce the official launch of the global platform today as the number of enrollees has been steadily rising. People seem to enjoy our extensive and comprehensive class content, which on average lasts around 11 hours. We find that our unique way satisfies basic to intermediate level learners who want to master skills and techniques in a new hobby” said Minjeong Yun, global team lead at Class 101.

One of the things learners have been especially responsive to is the “Class Kit,” which is a package containing all the materials necessary for participants to complete a course, which is delivered right to their doorstep. This allows learners to have immediate and far easier access to learning without the hassle of having to shop for materials or equipment. If you enroll in a pole dancing class, for example, you will receive a pole in the mail. If you enroll in an illustration class, you will receive all the watercolors, drawing pads, brushes, and materials you need.

Another unique aspect of the service is that it has an online feedback community where instructors and learners exchange feedback on the process and progress they make. Learners are able to ask questions they have during lessons, exchange opinions, and help keep one another motivated.

“Compared to existing players in the online education market like MasterClass and Skillshare, Class 101 is unique in that it offers an All-in-One class package. That is, everything needed to learn a new hobby or skill delivered right to your door,” said Yun, adding that “Class 101 dives much deeper into any given topic than sites people are probably used to and learners can go back and replay their course videos to review for up to 20 weeks after purchasing the course.”

Established in March 2018, Class 101 is led by a group of university students from the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). It attracted a 12 billion KRW (US $10.5 million) investment from Softbank Ventures, Mirae Asset Venture Investment, KT Investment, Spring Camp and Strong Ventures in 2019.

From paper textbooks to electronic scripts of lessons: the rapid path of Russian education to high technologies

MOSCOW, Russia, 2019-May-24 — /EPR  EDUCATION NEWS/ —  Any changes take time, and education reform all the more. This is a long and painstaking process with a lot of pitfalls. We are telling how the Moscow Department of Education managed to transform the educational system beyond recognition in a few years, turning it into one of the exemplary world models.

Just a few years ago, the backpack of an ordinary Russian school student was not easy to pick up — textbooks and additional materials in all subjects, exercise books, writing materials, and sports uniforms and shoes. Parents of pupils even in elementary school were perplexed how their children carry it to school every day.

Today the backpack of the Moscow school student has become twice as light. The fact is that now it’s not necessary for children to carry all paper textbooks with them. It is enough to have a tablet with you: all the training materials necessary for the lessons are digitized, stored in the cloud storage of the Moscow Electronic School and are always ready for use. The same is true of additional literature, works of art, and even tests: instead of leaflets or notebooks “for controls,” there are interactive tests on a tablet or in a laptop. In the same tablet or even on the phone, students can always see the lesson schedule, find out about new grades, or even do their homework.

But the most important thing that greatly facilitates the work of teachers is ready-made electronic scripts for lessons in all subjects. Work on creating a database of such multimedia scenarios has been going on for several years, since the launch of the MES program – the Moscow Electronic School. To date, the arsenal of Moscow teachers has more than 33,000 approved scenarios developed by professionals. These scenarios are in the electronic library of educational materials, and every Moscow teacher has access to it. Any teacher registered in the system can use these materials absolutely free of charge – it makes preparing for a lesson easier and more convenient. In this library you can find hundreds more textbooks prepared by other teachers, tens of thousands of comprehensive educational applications and even prototype laboratories on a number of subjects. So far, there are no analogues to such a resource anywhere in the world.

The work of Moscow teachers has also become much easier. First, all school teachers are provided with laptops or desktops. Each class has an interactive whiteboard and there are printers – if one of the students doesn’t have a tablet or laptop with him, all materials necessary for the lesson can be printed at any time.

Options such as an electronic diary and an electronic journal allow teachers to design a curriculum using various curricula, as well as create a class schedule, create their own author assignments, or use ready-made tests from an electronic library.

In general, thanks to the emergence of the Moscow e-school, parents, students and teachers received a unique system for all participants of the educational process. It is now convenient for teachers to communicate directly with parents of students through an electronic diary, so even parent meetings are now much faster and more fruitful. Parents from any device can always familiarize themselves with the success of the children, check what is set and warn the teacher that the child will miss classes on a given day.

School classes are another theme we want to dwell on. We have already said that all classes are equipped with interactive whiteboards – touch screen panels, which the teacher can use as traditional school blackboards, or show students selected photo and video materials, and even remotely visit the city’s museums! But this is not limited to this. Now classes of Moscow schools are becoming high-tech centers, workshops and laboratories. The project of introducing specialized and preprofessional classes has been implemented in the capital of Russia since 2015. Now students in Moscow schools can study in medical, engineering, natural science classes, fully immersed in the atmosphere of the profession already in grades 8-9.

All that we have listed – only the most impressive facts. In fact, the process is much broader and more interesting. The global goal of this Russian educational reform is to create a modern digital educational environment capable of quickly adapting to the ever-changing realities of life, ready for the emergence of new professions and specialties. You can learn more about the Moscow education reform at Bett Educar in Brazil. Virtual excursions in Moscow specialized classes and master classes devoted to the Moscow Electronic School project are waiting for visitors.

International Moscow Forum “City of Education” is one of the most significant events in the world of metropolitan education. The main objective of the forum is the exchange of experience in the development of various stages of the educational process, as well as the opportunity to demonstrate the latest educational technologies, resources and equipment. With all the latest innovations and advanced educational technologies will be available at the next forum “City of Education”, which will be held in Moscow from August 29 to September 1, 2019.

Four-year qualitative study addressing the social impacts of hate speech, racism and bigotry on social media platforms

SOUTHAMPTON, 20-Sep-2018 — /EPR Education News/ — As social media has experienced considerable exponential growth-rate over the past decade, sadly the same has occurred with online hate speech. Clear evidence of this picture is the fact that different international organisations, including the United Nations Human Rights Council, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, and national governments across Europe; namely the UK, Germany, France and Italy, have demanded that the large corporations behind the major social media platforms do more to address this issue. In fact, recent sociological research reveals that, while more needs to be done at the corporate level, there is also other actions that could be taken by national governments and educational bodies towards changing this picture in the near future.

To this end, Dr Luiz Valerio P. Trindade, has undertaken a four-year qualitative study addressing the social impacts of hate speech, racism and bigotry on social media platforms. Based on that, he has developed key recommendations that could stem the practice and help to prevent this phenomenon taking place and laying the foundations for reducing their occurrence in the years to come. With research revealing that even individual Facebook posts with racist and hate content can continue to engage users for up to 3 years after the initial publication, far from being just one moment of instant communication, hateful posts have a life spam that surprisingly extends over a long period. Perhaps more worryingly, the research evidences that social media is held to be a ‘No Man’s Land’ by the proponents of hate and bigotry, suggesting that these people feel at ease to convey their ideologies believing that authorities cannot reach them.

Dr Trindade has developed clear public policy recommendations that could make a difference towards promoting change in users’ behaviour on social media, such as:

  • Discussing the consequences of online hate speech with secondary school pupils and helping them to develop a clear understanding of the real life’s impacts and consequences of this practice. This is critical because social media is widely used by the 13-17 years-old age group, with over 1.8 million users of this age in the UK alone and 172 million globally.
  • Educational campaigns at national level to highlight the fact that online life is not detached from offline and that, in fact, they are intertwined.
  • Working to ensure that the large corporations behind the major social media platforms have effective and faster processes to remove inappropriate content that’s been flagged up by their users or spotted by their powerful algorithms.
  • Calling for these corporations to clearly highlight to their users that their platforms are not a safe paradise for them to convey racist views or promote bigotry exempt of consequences. Instead, these corporations need to set out clearly that identification data could be disclosed to the authorities, who could then hold them to accountable for their online attitudes.

Dr Trindade, PhD in Sociology by the University of Southampton says, “The increasing trend of construction and dissemination of hate speech, bigotry, misogyny and racism are apparently becoming the ‘new normal’ in the digital landscape across several European countries and also in the UK. Moreover, rather than fading away soon after publication, derogatory posts oftentimes become powerful magnets attracting several new users for the same conversation for up to three years, what can potentially increase the initial harm caused to the victim of the verbal abuse”.

Centres With A Difference

Perth, Australia, 2018-May-31 — /EPR EDUCATION NEWS/ — Nido Early School centres have established themselves as the benchmark for excellence in early education in Australia and one of the key things setting them apart from other education providers is that they practice what they preach.

Their values and ethos are bound by a passion to provide young minds with the ability, means and skills to enable and sustain future growth and development – and anyone who has experienced this philosophy in action will attest that these aren’t simply hollow words that sound good. The centres really do deliver on their promises.

There are a number of Nido Early School centres in West Australia and Victoria and the company is currently undergoing rapid growth to meet escalating demand for their premium standard of early childhood education.

Their philosophy is inspired by the globally acclaimed Reggio Emilia approach to early education which places significant emphasis on the importance of family and community and which has the premise that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ at the heart of everything it does.

This emphasis on involving family and community in order to give children the best possible care and education is activated and strengthened in many, many different ways at the centres. But no two centres are the same. Just as each community where the centres are located is unique, each Nido Early School is different and caters for the diverse and ever-evolving needs of children and families.

To meet these needs, a variety of fun and fruitful incursions take place at the centres on an ongoing basis.

These are arranged depending on the needs of the families at the school and the unique community that it serves, and they bring a whole new dimension to early learning. The children get involved in a variety of thought-provoking activities and their young minds are stimulated in a creative, interactive way.

Some recent incursions include visits from a representative from St John Ambulance WA, the local vet, a yoga instructor, a leading nutritionist and a naturopath – all of which brought learning to life in the nurturing and beautiful school environment.

The centres also demonstrate their commitment to the wellbeing of families and the wider community by providing access to essential services like dental care and child healthcare. Take the Nido Early School in the Perth suburb of Lakelands for example which has introduced a monthly visit from a child health nurse to assist busy families and nurture the development of children. Similarly, when the community dental van visits the Nido Early Schools in Perth, they provide important oral health services but they also benefit busy families.
Feedback from the community about these visits has been overwhelmingly positive and the benefits are clear.

Another aspect of Nido Early Schools that makes them ‘centres with a difference’ is their focus on helping those who are in need.

For example, a partnership with a local Dementia Club sees members of the club visiting a Nido centre once a month to share stories, form friendships and learn from one another – and judging by the level of excitement and anticipation about the visits by the children and club members alike, it’s a remarkable experience which benefits everyone. Another example of Nido Early School’s community involvement was a recent sleepout at one of the centres to raise funds and awareness for the St Vincent de Paul Society.

This is just a brief snapshot of some of the many ways that Nido Early School centres activate their educational philosophy and bring learning to life. Each centre is unique, taking its cue from the diverse needs of both the school community and the wider community and meeting those needs through the best possible education and care possible.

For more information on Nido Early Schools, please get in touch through the website www.nidoearlyschool.com.au where you’ll also find the contact details of the centre closest to you.

Top Tips to Become a Grandmaster

Professional Chess Coach and Author Mato Jelic Shares Top Tips to Become a Grandmaster

Adelaide, South Australia, 2018-Apr-29 — /EPR EDUCATION NEWS/ — Becoming a Grandmaster is a coveted dream for all chess enthusiasts around the world, but not all of them can make it. Successful coach and popular author Mato Jelic has recently discussed how to become a Grandmaster.

Mato Jelic, a highly experienced professional chess coach and the author or two chess books, has recently shared useful tips to help chess enthusiasts in their pursuit to become a Grandmaster. Mato is the founder of one of the world’s most popular YouTube channels related to chess, through which he offers free online chess lessons.

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) has its own set of guidelines and requirements for becoming a Grandmaster. The players must attend official FIDE tournaments and clinch top positions on at least three occasions to qualify for the process. They should continue to attend such competitions known as norms, until their score reaches the 2,500 mark.

Improving his or her chess skills is undoubtedly the foremost requirement for anyone to become a Grandmaster. According to Mato, this can be accomplished by following the tips mentioned below.

  • Learning the tactics: These are the move sequences that can put a player in an advantageous situation and defend or capture pieces. Forks, discovered attacks, and pinning are some of the most important tactics in the game of chess.
  • Knowledge of strategies: Once a player reaches the advanced level, they must have a core strategy for each match. Mato also stresses on the importance of strategies such as Nimzo Defense, Sicilian Defense, spacing strategies, and many others.
  • Proper execution of endgame situations: A clever endgame strategy is extremely important because a poor endgame can very easily spoil all the previous good work.
  • Regular practise: Any aspiring Grandmaster must practice as often as possible against top level players with a thorough understanding of the advanced tactics and strategies. Mato recommends joining a chess club or popular chess sites such as Chess.com

In addition to mastering chess skills, Mato mentions that the different personality traits of an individual can make a serious impact on his or her chances of becoming a Grandmaster. “Ultimately, Passion, inherent talent, competitiveness, discipline, along with a supportive environment, can make all the difference between success and failure,” he says.

A resident of Adelaide, South Australia, Mato is the founder of Chess School SA, a training school that offers chess classes throughout the Adelaide Metro and across the Country Schools in South Australia. He also runs many popular training programs for kids.

Children Gain Edge with Investment Program

Chicago, Illinois, 2018-Feb-05 — /EPR EDUCATION NEWS/ — With the stock market recently reaching dizzying heights, a program called Stepping Stones is providing parents with a fun means to educate their children on the workings of stocks and bonds. Being sold on Amazons’ Kindle store at the following link, the resource uses reading comprehension and mathematics to introduce third grade level children to a topic most of them won’t learn about until much later on in life (if at all). The primary character in the series is an inquisitive mouse called Dexter, who through the three books Dexter Learns About Stocks, Dexter Learns About Bonds and Dexter Learns About Stocks and Bonds Activity Book, uses interactions with his friends to educate children on the subject matter in a way which is both fun and entertaining. “It was important to make the character easily identifiable to children, so that they would become and remain engaged in the lessons being taught.” said creator of the program Anthony Rhodes.

The first book uses Dexter’s conversations with his friend, Wise Wally (an owl) to teach children how stocks work. “Wise Wally is an interesting character.” said Mr. Rhodes. “We naturally associate wisdom with owls, so using him to introduce Dexter to stocks was an easy decision to make.” The following book introduces a few more of his friends, as they approach a dilemma involving a racing contest. “The characters are confronted with a problem that most kids will immediately recognize.” he continued. “But solving it requires some quick thinking.” The final book challenges the child’s comprehension of the first two books, with puzzles and games designed to reinforce the information previously learned. “There are traditional entries, such as crossword puzzles and word searches, but I’ve also included unique mathematical and reading comprehension brainteasers, which are presented in a way which is so engaging, that most children don’t realize that they are actually learning something that is usually considered complex to many adults.”

Mr. Rhodes has been in the investment management business for many years, and developed the program as a means of providing parents with a resource for giving their children an early edge on a topic which normally has a veneer of mystery surrounding it. “At some point in their lives, these children will grow up and have to deal with stocks and bonds, so gaining an understanding of their workings at an early age provides them with that much more of an advantage.” he followed.

Stepping Stones is a natural extension of Mr. Rhodes’ agenda of educating individuals on the importance of investing. Through his popular How To Invest blog (www.howtoinvestblog.net), he guides readers on just about every aspect of the investing process; from the introduction of investment tools, to devising investment strategies. “Unfortunately, many individuals think of the stock market as the exclusive realm of the elite, and this thinking prohibits them from being able to take advantage of its growth potential.” he stated. “With my blog, I attempt to alter this belief so that just about anyone can learn about its workings, and the program definitely reinforces this idea.”

Special education: Wuhan City School for the Blind helped over 500 children pursue their dreams

Beijing, China, Jul-19-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Wuhan School for The Blind is the only school of its kind in Hubei province, central China. Not only does it cater to pupils who face enormous challenges because of their disabilities, but it is also proud to have a star teacher who has given new hope to the pupils.

China, with its huge population, has a large number of blind people. More than 5.5 million people are registered blind, among them, some 120,000 children. Though there are more than 50 special schools in major cities catering to the needs of these individuals, the task is never easy. Special facilities and teacher training is hard to come by and the children often feel alienated from society and lack ambition.

Zhang Long, born in 1975, volunteered to teach at Wuhan City School for the Blind in 2011. Though she had no experience teaching children with visual impairment, after seeing the difficulties faced by pupils there, she decided to change the course of her life and accept the challenge of making a difference to their future.

It wasn’t long before the gravity of the situation sunk in. As a music teacher she discovered many pupils at the school of 150 lacked the motivation to even turn up to class, believing their only career option would be to become a massage therapist, a common occupation for blind people in China.

Persevering, Zhang Long established a school radio station, a rock band for the most talented children, and invited performances from other schools. Eventually, the children responded to this new approach revealing both passion for music and hidden talent. One student, Gan Wenjun, proved gifted at piano, for which he won several national awards and even played with famous pianist Richard Clayderman in concert.

Among other successes, Zhang Long was awarded titles such as “Most Admirable Teacher in Wuhan” and a national honor “The Most Beautiful Teacher of China”,“I’ve never treated them as blind children,” says Zhang of the pupils. “It doesn’t matter that those kids can’t see. They can use their own ways to express themselves. I’ve never lowered my standards for them because they are blind, because to me they are just children.” Her approach seems to have worked and now pupils harbor ambitions such as to become a teacher, a professional singer and even an astronaut.

Wuhan City School for the Blind holds the belief that blind children are perfectly capable of the same achievements as sighted kids, given the right guidance and a little courage. Since its establishment, it has helped over 500 children pursue their dreams and been a cradle of many rising stars in music, sports, teaching and other fields. It aims to keep making contribution to China’s endeavors in special education.
