FindAMasters Praises Inventive Fundraising Scheme

FindAMasters wants to spread the word about a Manchester man in his bid to raise money for a Masters degree in Business Administration.

Scott Clay needs £23,000 in order to complete the degree, which would improve his CV and is related to his career. Scott, who is from Didsbury, originally went to his employers to ask for funding but was turned down. He currently only has £5,000 to go towards the Masters degree, but has come up with an inventive fundraising plan to get the money he needs.

Scott says he plans to ask people to donate £200 to his degree fund in return for a full eight hours’ worth of volunteer work at their chosen charity.

Concerning the donation price, Scott said: “I worked out what the price of the course was, how much I could put in myself, made a realistic analysis of how much time I could devote to this – I work full time and am also a part-time lecturer – and I came to that figure.”

He also said that he is prepared to work in any kind of environment and for any charity, with the only exceptions being for jobs that he cannot complete due to health and safety or insurance restrictions.

He said: “I’m happy to stack shelves in Oxfam for a day or go along to an event or work for one of their call centres; I’m not precious about it.”

Scott will need to complete a total of 720 hours of volunteering in order to collect enough money for the degree and, following his fundraising; he hopes to set up a scheme that puts his charity idea into practice for other prospective students.

Andy Pritchard of FindAMasters said: “We at FindAMasters hope that Scott’s bid to raise enough money for a Business Administration degree and would encourage others to follow his lead.”

“In the current economic climate it is becoming increasingly difficult to fund higher education courses and degrees, but people should not let this put them off from achieving their goals. There are many alternative routes available, and this is just one of them.”

UIC: In The Year Of The Dragon Mandarin Study Flies High

Leading London language school UIC (United International Languages) today stated that as the Chinese Year of the Dragon gets underway it is already seeing the study of Mandarin flying high. There are more students of Chinese at UIC than ever before and enquiries for places on its courses are at an all-time high.

UIC today claimed that many indicators suggest that the number of students studying Chinese will continue to grow. The cultural presence of China is ever more visible, the influence of China on the global economy and the economic clout of the Yuan are on the increase and there is a growing number of Chinese nationals living in, or visiting, the UK. Over the past decade the college has seen an annual increase in its Mandarin language students, and with the growing importance of the Chinese economy and its increasing cultural presence this trend looks set to continue. UIC teaches its Modern Foreign Language courses, including Chinese, from its centrally located London school, as well as offering teaching to be held in offices and workplaces nationwide and in the homes of private students across the UK. The Confederation of British Industry claims that Chinese is one of the most sought-after languages by British businesses in general. The growing numbers of corporate learning clients requesting UIC Chinese language courses to be held in their offices is testament to this need. In particular UIC have seen a surge in demand from businesses in the finance sector where money is increasingly talking in Chinese tones.

The government in China has done much to promote the global uptake of its language. By the end of the decade it aims to have established over a thousand Confucius Institutes worldwide to help spread the learning of Mandarin.

Official figures from the Confucius Institutes Headquarters suggest that across the globe the number of people learning Chinese is growing at a rate of nearly 2 million people every year and that there are currently over 50 million learners.

Chinese is a notoriously difficult language to learn. It contains four tones, an alien grammar, over 3500 characters and a profusion of homophones. This challenge, however, does not seem to be dampening the enthusiasm of students at UIC where more and more students are saying “Ciao” to more traditional language options like Italian and instead going on a quest to try and tame the dragon that is the Chinese language.

Text Lingo: Languages Change, Education Helps

As languages develop and change, students need to learn these innovations but also benefit from learning the foundations as well. Abbreviations used in text messages are becoming more prevalent, so the need for proper education in languages is becoming more important. Text lingo has its detractors, such as journalist John Humphrys, who has said this new way of communicating is ‘wrecking our language.’ The ambiguity of text speak can be illustrated by the abbreviation LOL, which can mean ‘lots of love’ or ‘laugh out loud.’ This is a prime example of how important traditional education is in the fast-paced world of language development.

A good language teacher will be able to combine tried and tested methods with more modern approaches to learning. As well as taking part in classroom learning, students can discover more about how their chosen language is changing by reading contemporary books. The vocabulary and sentence structure can be compared with novels from earlier periods, to understand how the language has developed over the centuries.

As well as reading, foreign language students should watch current TV shows. Thanks to the internet, you don’t even need to be in the country itself to tune in to local programmes. However, by taking classes in the mother country, such as taking English courses in London, you will get a much better feel for how the language is developing by being amongst local people. Schools like UIC London offer a range of English courses as well as European and Asian languages too.

Social Networking is now a Part of BLC Curriculum

Students are now taking advantage of BLC’s new programme, Planet Bubble, an online programme that incorporates social networking.

Planet Bubble merges the rigour of the classroom-learning environment with the entertainment and utility of social media and networking. On Planet Bubble students can learn contemporary forms of internet English, while also chatting live with others students, engaging with current events and popular themes as well as picking up a few jokes. More importantly, the programme can be accessed from anywhere. As long as you have filled out your enrolment form you can learn on Planet Bubble wherever you can find an internet connection.

The inception of Planet Bubble is a demonstration of BLC’s commitment to incorporating forms of social media into their curriculum and learning environment. They recognise that the internet is not only used for personal interaction but is also a large part of many business models, making it essential for English students to learn.

BLC follows its own advice and has a strong internet presence on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. They hope through these pages that students will be able to keep current on events around the school, as well as network with other students. A school presence online makes clear that English for BLC is not just what you get in a textbook but also is the living and evolving English of the internet and the world. Planet Bubble is a part of their push to prepare students to take advantage of these new forms of communication. Phrases such as ROFL, LOL, Tweet and Facebook-ed have a social currency among native speakers that BLC students need to be able to take advantage of. If they learn these phrases they can communicate comfortably in online situations.

In terms of an education, an English school with a commitment to social networking and media is probably the best place to go. Programmes like Planet Bubble make it possible to learn English no matter where you are. All you need is to fill out the enrolment form to start. The Co-operative’s Lasting Legacy For Young People With A Learning Disability

Young people across the UK with a learning disability have been given over £7 million opportunities to help to realise their potential as The Co-operative unveiled the total amount raised for its charity of the year during 2011.

The grand total reached £7,022, 866 and, the money raised by The Co-operative’s staff, members and customers will allow Mencap and sister charity ENABLE Scotland to launch ‘Inspire Me’ – a new project to provide activities and training that will give thousands of young people with a learning disability the chance to learn new skills and gain access to employment and volunteering opportunities in their communities.

Austin Healey, the former England rugby union player – and a Mencap celebrity ambassador – was on hand as The Co-operative announced the fundraising figure and, actors Sarah Jayne Dunn and Darren Langford also attended the celebration. The figure is the most ever raised by The Co-operative during one of its charity of the year campaigns and, is the highest figure received by Mencap from such a partnership.

Peter Marks, Group Chief Executive of The Co-operative, said: “Eight out of ten children with a learning disability are bullied. Young people with a learning disability face prejudice every day and a lack of opportunities which can make life a desperate struggle.

“The Co-operative is a national brand, but our roots have always been in the community and, it is this shared commitment to community projects that sets us apart. This money will leave behind a lasting legacy for a generation of young people with a learning disability. I am thrilled to say that together, we have been able to take a massive stride towards creating a cultural shift in the way young people are viewed and treated in this country – a key objective of our commitment to “Inspiring Young People”.

Across the country, The Co-operative – which has a retail outlet in every postal region and operates businesses including food, financial services, pharmacy, legal services, funeralcare and farming – has seen its staff, members, customers and suppliers, who were central to the success of raising this amazing amount, put the fun into fundraising. A Santa Dash and abseil, cycle rides, marathons and even a charity single by an employee band featuring Group Chief Executive of The Co-operative, Peter Marks, on drums kept the money flowing in for this worthwhile cause during 2011.

Mark Goldring, Mencap’s Chief Executive, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support shown by everyone in The Co-operative Group, their fundraising efforts and generosity have made the partnership a great success. I would like to thank the staff, members and customers for helping to raise such a fantastic sum of money which will give thousands of young people with a learning disability the chance to change their future.”

Peter Scott, ENABLE Scotland’s Chief Executive, continued: “We have been astonished at the commitment shown by The Co-operative Group, employees, members and customers. The creativity and generosity of staff has been quite remarkable, and the money raised will give thousands of young people who have a learning disability the opportunity to build a brighter future. ENABLE Scotland would like to thank each and every person who has contributed over the course of the partnership.”

“Inspire Me” will work with local communities to change negative attitudes towards young people with a learning disability. Support will also be available for parents, families and carers with information events on issues including supported living, benefits and leisure activities.

Huge Demand Inspires Edulabs to Reschedule Critical Webinar Series on Tablet Buying for Education

Edulabs Learning Solutions Ltd., a leading Thai-based innovator of 21st Century electronic teaching systems (www.edulabsglobal.com), has received overwhelmingly positive daily responses and a higher-than-anticipated demand for its “must attend” Webinar series. The Webinar www.edulabsglobal.com/webinar) cover CRUCIAL considerations that buyers of tablets for educational institutions MUST understand before buying. The Webinars became immediately over-subscribed at launch, and so Edulabs Global has decided to re-launch the Webinar series with new times and dates in order to accommodate the increased interest and demand for registered seats.

Gregory Pommerenk, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Edulabs Learning Solutions, Ltd., explains, “There is no doubt that the world-wide demand and excitement for Tablet computers and Smartphones in education is growing stronger and stronger each and every day, and has fueled this increased interest in Edulabs’ Webinar series. With this also comes the need for knowledge and information that will assist the educational communities around the world to make sure that the money they are about to collectively spend is invested wisely, effectively and accurately.”

The digital learning revolution

Schools around the world are starting to proactively adopt mobile learning programs and initiatives, establish or upgrade their broadband infrastructures and also replace traditional textbooks with digital textbooks at an unprecedented rate. Top online learning institutions such as www.learning.com and www.epals.com have created eLearning material which has revolutionized the global education industry.

It is estimated by respected research organizations that in the K-12 (Primary and Secondary) educational sector alone, there will be a need for in excess of 200 million Tablet computers and over 400 million Smartphones within the next 3-5 years. This is not including the huge need and demand in developing countries and underdeveloped areas of countries such as China, India and Brazil, which affects hundreds of millions of school-aged children and teens.

Explosion in educational demand for eLearning solutions.

In today’s interconnected and inter-dependent globalized world, the global community at large has finally awoken to the fact that having billions of uneducated and unskilled people, especially youth, affects the entire world, and is subsequently striving more proactively than ever to improve the state of education amongst youths. Edulabs Global feels that all of these additional areas are poised to soon explode in terms of demand. The countries of Africa, China, India, Brazil and many ASEAN countries have combined populations in excess of 3 billion people, of which hundreds of millions of youth desperately need much improved and affordable educational solutions.

Subsequently, more digital educational content and applications are becoming available at affordable prices and more and more verifiable studies are proving the value of digital web-based education. This in turn prompts more countries, especially developing counties, to get wired with hi-speed infrastructures that are finally including even the most remote and previously unwired areas of these countries.

New times and dates for Edulabs Webinar Series

The new Webinar times and dates will be announced via our website and a formal press release during the week of February 20th, 2012. In addition to the impressive list of guest presenters and speakers that are already confirmed to attend, Edulabs is also in the process of adding several additional Tablet and Smartphone, Cyber-safety, Edu-tech and Digital Contents and Applications (including Digital Textbooks) companies that wish to participate in the Webinar series.

Please stay tuned to the Edulabs web site and news wires for upcoming announcements regarding the new times and dates of the Webinar series, and take part in these“cannot miss” exciting events!

Evening language courses at SGI

Short days and frosty evenings can make the idea of getting through winter in London a bleak one. For those looking to spice up their evenings and minimise time on the sofa this winter, you might want to look at St George International evening courses. SGI language school offers a variety of foreign language evening courses, making learning a language that much more attainable for those who work.

When trying to balance learning a language with a full time job, finding a language school that fits in with your timetable can be half the challenge. St George International offers evening classes in German, French and Spanish and is very centrally located in London’s Oxford Circus.

Classes run from 18:30 to 20:30 during weeknights meaning they’re accessible for those working in Central London. Class size is kept to a maximum of 12 so that each student gets as much teacher attention as possible. Importantly, classes are taught by qualified native-speaker teachers so students have the benefit of learning conversational rather than just text book languages. Various levels are available for each course. Students can take an easy to follow online test to determine their level. Courses run for 10 weeks and prices vary from £185 to £195.

For those wishing to attend Spanish courses London can seem like a daunting place to start. Many people find it hard to fit learning a language in around the busy city lifestyle. St George International’s flexible approach to learning helps to combat this. You can attend classes at the school or opt for private tuition. Private tuition is offered at a variety of levels and there are Intensive and Super Intensive courses available. Businesses can take advantage of the in-company courses that SGI provides, both for small groups and individuals.

For many wishing to take French courses London is a great option. However, a great way to cement new found language skills is of course, to start speaking with native speakers. SGI’s partner schools in Montpellier, Nice, Paris and Vichy provide the amazing opportunity to study French in France. Most courses have a maximum class size of 15 and consist of 20 to 30 lessons a week.

Winter in London need not be dull – aspiring French, Spanish and German speakers can put their snowy evenings to good use with SGI’s evening language courses. The school’s central location and flexible options for learning make the whole process of learning a language that much more doable.

It is also part of a course entitled Communication Station that recently won the British Council awards for innovation in language teaching. The course is designed to encourage students to speak more fluently, quickly and with a lot more confidence than they knew existed. The podcasts typically contain guides to London, advice on studying and learning languages, with a range of interviews thrown in for good measure. Soon, UIC are hoping to start running programmes centring around London in the other languages that they teach, helping students to come together and learn in a fun and engaging way.

The social programme is another key factor that makes UIC stand out above the rest. Based in the heart of London, the school website provides up-to-date information on the top attractions, especially those that are free, all around the city. UIC often organises its own social activities, which include trips around and outside of London, attending events with teachers, and holding parties especially for students. Information on all trips and activities are displayed in both the school and online, whereby you can also access past and future events, photos and recommendations in the Student Community section. Day trips to Oxford or Cambridge are also highly popular, along with the more extravagant weekend visits to cities such as Paris, Edinburgh, Amsterdam or even New York.

Students at UIC come from as many as 50 different countries to study either one of their many English courses, or take evening classes in a foreign language. From those 16 to those in their 60’s, all adults from all international backgrounds are brought together under one roof to study and support one another throughout their course. With extensive online resources, including private e-learning for current studies and a blog that helps to build a community between students, UIC places importance upon a relaxed and friendly atmosphere that aids and nurtures learning and development.

SGI – a Christmas Gift with a Difference

Parents looking for an alternative to the usual Christmas gift this year might want to consider sending their children to a language school. St George International school has a variety of courses available for children aged 5 to 15. The school has also been enjoying excellent ratings from its students for 2011.

St George International is a London based language school which has recently completed a survey of its students. The school received excellent feedback from students from August to October of 2011, with 98% of students saying they would recommend the school.

The survey also revealed that not only would a very high percentage of students recommend the school but teachers have received consistently positive feedback also. The average teacher score (as rated by students) for August of 2011 was 8.83, September was 9 and October was an even more impressive 9.3. As a student, having faith in the capabilities of your teacher is obviously of extreme importance. Furthermore, 99% of students surveyed in both August and October felt their English had improved, with 97% of students surveyed in September cited an improvement. Many of these students felt their English was of such a level that they could now progress to university in English.

As well as Business English at St Georges, courses for children are also available throughout summer. St George International caters for children via its Young Learner programmes. The SGI Children London course is available to children aged five to nine years and is based in London’s beautiful Regent’s Park. Any level of English is acceptable and the children learn through a variety of activities.

10 to 15 year old students can take advantage of the Residential Summer Holiday course which takes place in an historic house in Eastbourne. Courses vary from one to eight weeks and children can be accommodated in the house. The course structure is such that English lessons take place in the morning with the afternoons being reserved for fun activities and events. Saturdays involve a day long trip for the students.

If you’re searching for a school of English London is a great place to start. St George International, in particular, is flexible with its children’s programmes and its excellent feedback from students this year make it an all the more feasible choice. Parents looking to enrol their children in the summer courses should be advised that they tend to book out in advance.
