Traditional Teaching Methods Bore Students

Earlier this week, a spokesperson from St George International (SGI) suggested that traditional teaching methods were ineffective. The representative explained that lessons needed to incorporate more creativity to keep the attention of the modern student.

Today’s youth tends to lapse into boredom far more easily than earlier generations. Technological advancements have ensured that everything in the world happens very quickly. But, these developments have come at a cost – the cost of students who now expect everything to happen instantly.

The shortened attention span of modern students has resulted in the advancement of“edutainment.” This educational method combines entertainment and education to create an environment in which the students enjoy studying. Language institutes are attempting to breakdown the notion that a classroom is a boring place. If teachers want to maximise development, they must find a means by which to counter this timewasting boredom.

SGI’s answer to this problem is to take students out of the classroom. In June, SGI modified its curriculum to include a wide range of activities not normally associated with education. Instead of sitting in a classroom, students could enjoy a city tour of London with one of the teachers. Other excursions included a visit to science museum, a theatre trip and a football match against a rival school was also organised. The weekend trips to Paris, Belgium, Edinburgh and Amsterdam also offered students the opportunity to really hone their speaking skills.

The SGI spokesperson explained that “Studying English is so much more than learning English in the classroom.” Students will only remain interested if they practically apply what they are studying. Students dislike compulsory foreign language courses at school, because they battle to see the point in studying them. When students are encouraged to practise a language in a normal social environment, they immediately want to learn more.

The SGI spokesperson explained that students were often welcomed with drinks at a local pub. He said that they wanted to allow students to practice “English in a relaxed way.” He said that they wanted to separate SGI from the negative connotations often attributed to schools. Instead of simply being a place of learning, SGI is also a place where students can travel and meet new friends.

Modern students may have shorter attention spans, but this does not render them unteachable. Teaching methods need to adapt in order to meet the requirements of today’s students. St George International shows us that when you sign up for a German course London doesn’t have to be boring experience.

Students Experience Real London With St George International

Language students attending St George International (SGI) school have been getting a taste of the real London in a series of guided cultural visits throughout the capital.

Staff at St George International (SGI) have taken advantage of the school’s enviable location between Oxford Street and Regent Street by organising outings for students to see some of the city’s festivals, events and attractions.

Whether these opinions are about what is or is not cool to wear, how long they should be allowed to go out or which rules were made to be broken, teenagers want to show they aren’t children anymore.

The Royal College of Psychologists says it is normal for adolescents to want to prove that they can survive in the world and make their own decisions. It is common, they explain, for teenagers to have and express strong opinions contrary to those of their parents. This can be hard on parents who imagine that their now teenage daughter or son is still the loveable and pint-sized child of their memory. Unfortunately for attached parents, an essential part of adolescence is this very act of gaining independence.

For most the summer is an unstructured time. Sons and daughters run about town with their friends and hang around the house during holiday. This is a wasted opportunity because the summer can be a great way to foster independence by enrolling your child in courses or camps. Being away from home will allow them to feel as if they have control of their daily life but will also encourage them to participate in structured activities.

Foreign language study can be a great way to this. Here they will make new friends, live away from home (in a safe environment) and build their confidence through learning and exploring a new language and culture. Depending on the language your child wishes to speak, there are several course locations across Europe that could be right for him or her.

For summer camp Switzerland and France could be great places to learn French, while Germany is a great place for a teen to take German courses. When looking for courses and camp, it might be important to look for programmes that are not just language programmes but that also offer extracurricular activities. Perhaps they have courses on the local cuisine or offer sports and outdoor excursions as part of the camp. You can incorporate other interests you son or daughter might have this way.

Who knows, maybe allowing your child to attend French courses in France will mean that you have your own personal translator for holidays and, if they manage to squeeze in some French cooking courses, your own personal chef.

Saint George International Students Are Looking to the Burns Night in London for Language and Fun

Saint George International students are looking forward to the Burns Night in London because it allows them to immerse themselves in the language and the culture of the British Isles.

After 50 years, St George knows the importance of not only teaching and drilling grammar but also exposure to the culture that surrounds the language. The Burns Night in London is a celebration of one of Scotland’s greatest poets; bring Scottish culture and food to the heart of this capital.

Hundreds of restaurants are participating in this night, making menus that feature Scottish classics like haggis and Scottish whiskey. Comedy venues have invited some of Scotland’s best comedians to come down for that night and there will be poetry readings and folk music across the city.

Some less traditional celebrations are happening as well. The London Cyclist Campaign has a fundraiser every year on this date for their organization and many restaurants are running interesting deals for unusual guests. Kettners, for example, is giving away a free glass of champagne to each customer who comes in a kilt.

Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, was born 252 years ago on January 25. He pioneered both the Romantic poetry movement and also what would be later the political concepts of liberalism and socialism. His English poetry was highly critical of the political climate in which it was written and he enjoyed a huge celebrity during his lifetime. Some great poems of his include “Auld Lang Syne”, “A Red, Red Rose”, “A Man’s A Man for A’ That”, “To a Louse”, “To a Mouse”, and “Ae Fond Kiss”.

Learning French in a French city is proving to be an attractive option for many in England. It is an opportunity to master a second language holistically, by living and learning in the country of its origin.

London, December 2010 – 21-year-old Sofia Preston and her mother, Sarah, are packing their bags for an extended holiday in France. After beginning the new year in Paris, the mother-daughter duo will head to Lyon to enrol on French language courses.

‘I took a couple of years off after secondary school to work. It was then that I realised that, if I wanted to do well professionally, I would need to improve my communication skills. Knowing more than one language is a big asset in any customer relations job. That’s when I decided I was going to learn French,’ explains Sofia. Sofia’s mother, too, found the idea of living in France to learn French appealing.‘We did an online search for French language institutes for Sofia. Initially the idea was that Sofia would stay in France for a year to learn French. Then we found out ESL has French courses for those above the age of 50, too. That was when I decided that I would tag along with Sofia for the three months to brush up my French, adds Sarah Preston.

These institutes offer specially designed courses that make learning languages such as French easier and more enjoyable. For many years, language schools around the world have been targeting those students that are taking a gap year before pursuing higher education at university or that are taking a year-off after completing their studies. The rise in the number of language schools and students wanting to take language courses has brought about a number of changes within the industry. Language schools have begun to target students of different age groups – from juniors as young as eight years old to seniors over the age of 50.

“I think the pace at which globalisation is taking place has forced people to get out of their comfort zones and explore new places and languages. This has created a new level of interest in learning languages. Though students are still learning languages at the degree or postgraduate level, many others are choosing shorter term courses that help them converse fluently in these languages”, says Teresa Anderson, a linguistic expert. Compared with five years ago, there is also a variety of customised language courses to choose from. Depending on the age group in question, the activities associated with language training also differ. That is how I decided to move to Lyon for a few months to learn French while trying out living in France”, describes 62-year-old Amy Shriver. “In addition to French courses France‘s wonderfully patient people have helped me gain confidence trying out my rusty French. For studying the French language France is very different from Canada in terms of the dialect I have heard. There is a certain sweetness to the way it is spoken in France.”, adds Shriver’s classmate, Thea Driver. Most students enrolling in language schools are still pursuing their college education. However, the increasing demand for language courses among those about to become teenagers and pensioners is helping this industry to expand.
