New Obesity And Tobacco Prevention Products For Preschoolers And Childcare Providers By Cafe Prevention

cafeprevention.com

CafePrevention.com announces the addition of two exciting, affordable, and new prevention products – the Fit for the Future Toolkit for preschoolers and childcare providers and the tobacco education resource, Smoking Makes Me Ugly program, for middle school students.

In an effort to provide exceptional service, Community Partnership will do their best to accommodate those who need the prevention education resource order before June 30 for fiscal year deadlines.

Community Partnership has developed their business around creating and supplying parents, schools, agencies and communities around the globe with a wide variety of tested and innovative prevention strategies and materials. Each product is both educational and eye-catching, and will engage the target audience, whether they are pre-schoolers, teens or adults.

The Fit for the Future Toolkit is designed for children ages 3-5 and childcare providers. The childhood obesity rate for children in this age group has risen to 12.4%, and childcare providers offer the perfect setting to teach about, and encourage, healthy eating and physical activity habits. The kit includes a teacher’s manual, training DVD, children’s books, a movement CD, as well as games and activities to support children making healthy choices.

Comments from childcare teachers have been extremely positive, and evaluations indicate the children are remembering what they learn and the cooks are changing what they serve.

For middle school students, Community Partnership is proud to unveil the Smoking Makes Me Ugly DVD, a comprehensive youth tobacco prevention program. The target ages of 10-12 years old were chosen, as these are the ages the CDC has identified as at risk to begin tobacco use.

Physicians, educators and students themselves were responsible for the content of the interactive DVD, and features include an animated tour of the body, hosted by Cig Free, the talking cigarette, showing how smoking affects teens; interactive lessons, including what smoking does to the outward appearance, and accompanying handouts and worksheets for teachers and students.

Smoking Makes Me Ugly is a new approach to an old problem and has been enthusiastically received by teachers and student alike. Teachers report the tobacco education and prevention DVD is unique and unmatched by any other in its approach to educating middle school youth about the hazards of smoking.

Both the Fit for the Future Toolkit and Smoking Makes Me Ugly DVD are designed to deliver critical information in an engaging and affordable format. CafePrevention.com is a community’s source for high quality prevention materials designed to improve the health and well being of youth.

Café Prevention is full of postcards, games, bookmarks, door hangers, wallet cards and posters on substances of abuse and teen resiliency. For The First Time Google Has Partnered With A Training Provider To Help Teach Marketing Executives How To Get The Most From The Google Marketing Applications

With the launch of Reed Learning’s Google Marketing Academy, marketers in the UK have been given a comprehensive range of search marketing courses, that not only cover the core disciplines of Google AdWords, Google Analytics and Search Engine Optimisation but are accredited by the search engine giant themselves ensuring that the course content is not only up to date and relevant, but will help marketers, web developers or SME owners to get the most from their online marketing spend.

Reed Learning

Dan Cobley, Marketing Director at Google said “Reed Learning’s Google Marketing Academy is the first of its kind in the UK. We’re delighted to endorse these programmes as effective, best-practice learning in the essentials of search marketing.”

In the current economic slowdown, many businesses are looking to maximise the return from their marketing budget. As “the UK is the world’s most developed market for online commerce, with 17p in every £1 spent online” (e-Retail Sales Index, July 2008) coupled with the ability to see the complete Return on Investment from digital marketing activities, unlike many other marketing methods, online marketing offers an attractive proposition to savvy businesses.

Reed Learning is offering a range of online marketing courses for both beginners and advanced marketers. The Google AdWords training will help teach businesses how to create and maintain effective Pay Per Click accounts, Google Analytics Training will teach marketers how to make websites work harder and how to analyse a website’s online presence, whilst the Search Engine Optimisation training will help businesses maximise their online exposure in the natural search engine results pages.

Alex Fenn, Marketing Director, at Reed Learning said: “We’re delighted to be able to add the Reed Learning Google Marketing Academy to our course portfolio. In our research, 71% of marketing professionals saw Google AdWords as an important tool for increasing return and reducing spend. With so many organisations feeling the pinch this year, one of these courses will be a valuable and timely investment.”

Marylhurst University Adds New Online MBA Curriculum Focused Around Sustainability

Marylhurst University will expand its graduate program this summer and offer a new online MBA in sustainable business to meet a growing need in one of the few industries that is adding, not cutting jobs, thanks in part to the 2009 federal stimulus bill.

Marylhurst University

Concentrations within the new degree program will address the most pertinent sustainability topics: renewable energy, green development, natural resources and public policy. Inaugural classes in the new program begin June 22, and enrollment is underway.

With $62 billion in direct green spending, plus another $20 billion in tax incentives allocated in the 2009 stimulus bill, jobs in sustainability are growing in almost every industry. The bill specifically allocates $500 million for the creation of green jobs. In addition, many states are creating their own green job initiatives.

“We have collaborated with industry leaders to create a relevant and compelling curriculum in sustainability,” said David Plotkin, Marylhurst University provost. “Each course has been written to incorporate the important issues pertaining to the green movement. Being in Portland, one of America’s greenest cities, gives us a strategic advantage to be a leader in this area.”

The new MBA concentration in sustainability becomes the second concentration (joining real estate) available solely online at Marylhurst. The university has the highest combined on-ground and online enrollment of any MBA program in Oregon. The program’s small, seminar-style classes provide a strong grounding in ethics, teamwork and communication to students preparing to become leaders in today’s fast-paced global marketplace.

As a longtime education provider to “non-traditional” students, Marylhurst was among the first to offer online classes (since 1996), and the university is recognized by the Council for Adult & Experiential Learning for its “comprehensively effective practices in serving adult learners.” This includes a 2004 CAEL Institutional Service Award for “outstanding commitment to the expansion of lifelong learning opportunities and for innovative efforts to improve access and quality in academic programs for adult learners.”

With a multimillion-dollar campus-wide reconstruction completed over the past decade, Marylhurst is undergoing tremendous growth, though that hasn’t changed the university’s commitment to providing a personalized education to all students.

“While the student population is growing, we are still maintaining small class sizes, adhering to high faculty standards and staying true to our commitment to developing ethical leaders,” said Mary Bradbury-Jones, accelerated online program director.

Debatepedia Documents All Pros And Cons Of Merit Pay For Teachers

Debatepedia has developed the world’s most extensive article on the pros and cons of merit pay for teachers. The article draws over 30 pro and con arguments and quotations from over 20 of the most outstanding editorials, opinion pieces, essays, and political statements on the issue. And, it structures these arguments and quotations in Debatepedia’s unique pro/con “logic tree” structure. The structure helps separate the primary sub-debates (and arguments and counter-arguments) in this debate, which are represented by some of the following questions: Does merit-based pay improve education? Does it improve the quality of teaching by incentivizing hard work? Does it help attract and retain quality teachers? Does it help weed out bad teachers? Does merit pay distract teachers? Does it create undesirable competition between teachers? Does it discourage teachers from going to needy schools? Can teacher merit be successfully measured? Or does varying student performance get in the way? Is merit pay fairer to teachers? Does it fall pray to principal cronyism? Does it encourage teachers to cheat? Does the market demonstrate the importance of pay for performance? If teachers should be paid more in general, is merit pay the best way to do it? What do past examples of merit pay around the world demonstrate? Debatepedia’s community has outlined the pros and con arguments and quotations that fit within and respond to the above sub-debate questions, making it truly the most comprehensive breakdown of the debate available.

President Obama has repeatedly stated his support for merit pay for teachers. Yet, with many priorities on his plate, it would appear that the debate will continue for some time, and even after any policy decisions are made, the debate is likely to continue for years to come, in the United States and abroad. For this reason, Debatepedia’s pro/con structure is particularly valuable in helping walk citizens and decision-makers through the many arguments and quotations so that they can effectively deliberate, make decisions, and make the policy that will guide education in the 21st century.

Debatepedia is a wiki encyclopedia of pros and con arguments and quotations. It is essentially “the Wikipedia of pros and cons”. Started in 2006 by Brooks Lindsay and William Wnekowicz out of Georgetown University, Debatepedia subsequently merged with the International Debate Education Association in 2007. IDEA is a 501c3 non-profit piloted initially by the Open Society Institute in 1999. While IDEA promotes debate in all of its forms around the world, Debatepedia fits within its mission to expand a new industry in journalism – what it calls the “in-depth journalism of public debates”.

Leaders in Collaborative eLearning Work Together on Web Seminar Series

iCohere Inc. and BlueStreak Learning have partnered to provide a free Webinar on the topic of Collaborative eLearning.

According to Jennifer De Vries, President of BlueStreak Learning, “Many education programs provide one-way communication that pushes information out to learners. However, research studies have proven that people learn when they are engaged in the learning process. The premise of collaborative learning is that learners don’t just learn from a course or an instructor; they also learn from each other. Web-based collaborative eLearning environments are developed to facilitate both the formal learning from an instructor or a course, as well as the informal learning occurs with peer interaction.”

“Our collaborative eLearning courses are built around facilitating interactions among students and faculty alike, encouraging experienced professionals to engage with each other around relevant content,” said Lance Simon, Vice President of Client Services for iCohere. “When everyone in the group shares their professional stories, we often end up taking away a set of memorable lessons and best practices that participants can immediately use on the job.”

Our free one-hour webinars provides a case study of a successful collaborative eLearning project, as well as best practices for developing your own collaborative eLearning program. Register for a webinars session online at http://www.icohere.com/webinars.htm.

University of New England’s Online Graduate Education Program Hits Record 500 Enrollments

The University of New England’s online Master of Science in Education (MSEd) program exceeded the 500 student enrollments barrier this fall, just one year after the program was launched.

Said Dr. Arthur Goldstein, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, “We are very excited to see such tremendous success so early in the life of this program. To have come this far so quickly is a testament not only to faculty and staff but also to our students.”

The program is already garnering recognition within the tight-knit education community. Tech & Learning magazine recently identified University of New England’s online master’s in education as one of the top online programs in the country.

Said Dr. Douglas Lynch, Chair, Department of Education, “The online Master of Science in Education program is a fantastic opportunity for motivated teachers and educational leaders to interact and learn. Our student base from across the nation enhances the shared-learning experience. The curriculum requires teachers to employ what they learn in their classroom making the program highly engaging and authentic. Teachers can apply what they learn right away.”

The students themselves appear to share the enthusiasm for the curriculum as is evidenced by the program’s retention. University of New England’s online MSEd program boasts a 98% retention rate, a figure many institutions rarely see.

Said online student Kimberly Rockwell, “I feel I interact more with my instructors online than the traditional format. They are very accessible and regularly check-in. It is much easier to write a quick email anytime of the day than to wait for certain hours to visit the professor in his/her office.”

Portland State University Honors University Of Cincinnati Professor Edward J. Latessa With Hatfield Scholar Award

The Mark O. Hatfield School of Government honored Dr. Edward J. Latessa with the Hatfield Scholar Award. Dr. Latessa has led a distinguished career in the field of Criminal Justice and is currently a Professor and Head of the Division of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati. He has co-authored seven books including Corrections in the Community and Corrections in America. Additionally, Dr. Latessa has directed over 100 funded research projects, including studies of juvenile justice programs, drug courts, and intensive supervision programs.

Senator Mark O. Hatfield, for whom the award is named, said “I admire [Dr. Latessa’s] dedication to public service. Oregon is a state that values new ideas that serve the cause of social justice and consequently, we are proud that he would accept this award.”

Dr. Latessa’s intrepid perspective on academic practice has inspired the creation of two highly reputable online Criminal Justice degree programs. In 2001, the University of Cincinnati launched a Master of Science in Criminal Justice to great success. When approached about the possibility of launching a Bachelor’s degree Dr. Latessa recommended Portland State University’s own Division of Criminology and Criminal Justice as the ideal candidate and in 2005 this recommendation came to fruition.

At the award ceremony, Dr. Latessa said “I have dedicated most of my career to trying to improve programs, trying to make us a little more effective. I am happy if I can get one program, make it more effective, and change a few peoples’ lives. Many times the difference between us and the people that are incarcerated is a very small, thin line. It’s important that we understand that they are human beings, they are citizens, they are our neighbors that are incarcerated. It’s important to work hard to see that what we know works its way into the field.”

About the Hatfield Scholar Award
The Hatfield Scholar Award, named after the distinguished former Governor and Senator from Oregon, Mark O. Hatfield is offered to exceptional scholars whose careers best exemplify the Hatfield ideals of public interest, scholarship, public service, civil and human rights, social justice, and peace. The award is given annually by the combined faculties within the Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University.

About Portland State University
PSU was founded in 1946 to help educate returning World War II veterans, and continues this tradition of adapting to changing social and educational circumstances. PSU’s Criminology and Criminal Justice division, part of the Hatfield School of Government, has been awarding bachelor degrees for nearly 40 years. The online learning program enables distance learners to interact with an interesting, passionate group of fellow students and learn with the same distinguished faculty that teach the on-campus program.

Four Deadly Intimate-Communication Mistakes Identified by Psychologist

Why is it that you can be sailing along in a conversation with your spouse or lover and seemingly everything is going great, and then all of a sudden it seems like you hit a complete dead-end beyond which you cannot move… and like everything freezes in the relationship?

Psychologist and marriage counselor Dr. Max Vogt has suggested an answer. One or both of you has committed what he calls one of the “Four Deadliest Communication Mistakes.”

Dr. Vogt claims that any one of these four “communication mistakes” can stop intimacy dead in its tracks like a train wreck.

The “Four Mistakes” most often happen when people are trying to solve difficult or confusing parts of their relationship. Vogt says that the greatest opportunities for intimacy — and the greatest chance at blowing the intimacy — happen exactly at these moments. Which is why he suggests you need to understand when you are making those mistakes.

1. Explaining yourself. You try to explain your position, and dig yourself in the more you try.

2. What he calls the “You Too,” or turning the tables right back on your partner, showing them that they “are no angel either.”

3. Asking “well, what do you want me to do different?” Although this seems like a generous offer, Vogt says more often than not it’s just a way of “turning off the heat” from your partner and attempting to get them to become your “probation officer.” Not a good idea in intimacy, says Vogt! We agree.

4. “Going away.” By this, Vogt refers to both literally walking out with the attitude “I just can’t take this right now,” but also going away by spacing out, changing the topic or other (many other) creative tactics to turn down the heat.

Vogt claims that once a couple is in the “vicious cycle” of these deadly communication mistakes, it’s often very difficult to get out of it. So his recommendation is to recognize the power of them and avoid them as much as possible.

UIC Offers Online Health Informatics Master’s Degree For Health Care Technology Professionals UIC Offers Online Health Informatics Masters Degree For Health Care Technology Professionals

The Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) began offering a fully online Master of Science in Health Informatics degree in fall 2007, and in just one year enrollment has grown 107 percent, from 32 students to 86 students.

The 45-credit hour program prepares students to shape the cutting-edge technology and processes that are revolutionizing the health care industry. It is one of only three online master’s degree programs to be approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

“This is a program that has great value for health care industry professionals,” said Charlotte (Toby) Tate, dean of the College of Applied Health Sciences. “As the industry continues to move forward to paperless medical, financial and insurance records, it will take well-trained and knowledgeable professionals to develop, implement, and maintain systems to store and manage the information.”

Designed for working professionals who wish to excel in the rapidly-evolving health care industry, this Master’s degree can be completed in as little as 18 months without interrupting the student’s work schedule.

Students receive instruction from permanent, industry-experienced UIC professors rather than instructors who are contracted for short-term assignments, common in some online educational forums. Notably, the program meets the terms of all existing policies, procedures, deadlines and regulations of the University of Illinois at Chicago, giving students a prestigious graduate degree supported by a world-class, research-intensive university.

Blending a technical foundation with coursework covering current clinical trends, government regulations, and health care-specific best management practices, UIC’s curriculum equips students with the analytical and managerial expertise sought after in this dynamic field. The UIC health informatics program was the first in the country to focus not just on technology, but also on the social and organizational factors that often determine whether a technology implementation will be successful in a health care institution.

“Students enter the program to either enhance their current careers or transition into new, more challenging fields,” said associate dean and program director Larry Pawola. “Depending on their work experience, graduates are prepared for a wide range of roles in mid- to high-level management in the health care information setting. Our graduates become chief security officers, systems or application analysts, project managers and IT department directors, just to name a few.”

Alumni of UIC’s health informatics programs (online and classroom) are at the forefront of the industry with employers that include KPMG International, the American Hospital Association, Cerner Corporation, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and numerous hospital and health provider organizations.

With 25,000 students, 15 colleges and research funded at over $332 million, the University of Illinois at Chicago is the largest university in the Chicago area. Located in the Illinois Medical District, just west of Chicago’s Loop, UIC is a vital part of the educational, technological and cultural fabric of the city. According to U.S. News & World Report, UIC is one of the most diverse and affordable universities in the nation. UIC is a “Best Buy,” accordingly to Barron’s Best Buys in College Education.

Cybershala.com is a new educational website that brings, via easy to access virtual classrooms, advanced international curriculums like Singapore Math to children all across the United States

You see it on the news time and time again – American students are falling behind the rest of the world in Mathematics, Science, and other subjects. In fact, a recent study published Nov 14, 2007 by the American Institutes for Research puts American children far behind their foreign peers in regards to math and science.

It was this very notion that led to the birth of a new virtual learning website dedicated to bringing US students the best educational curriculums the world has to offer.

Launching earlier this month, Cybershala.com is the brainchild of Ripujeet Sharma, an engineer who found his own children were having trouble with math. Being a world traveler, he did some research, and found a few interesting notions. “In my research and studying other curriculums, I found out there was a huge ‘learning gap’ in what was being taught, and what could be learned” says Sharma “In essence, we’re doing it backwards, and that’s why we are ranking so low.”

Sharma took the next logical step and created a substantial website that acts as an online learning portal. His website offers an international curriculum via online virtual classes, and is aimed primarily at home schooled children and public school students who need extra help. The first offering is what his own children had trouble with – math.

“The website is starting out by offering what is called ‘Singapore Math’” commented an excited Sharma “and Singapore Math is simply a name for the Math Curriculum they teach to students in Singapore, whom have consistently ranked amongst the highest in the world.”

Indeed, Singapore Math has gained worldwide respect, and differs from other math curriculums because it utilizes a visual approach to problem-solving instead of solely a memory-based one.

Sharma also built the educational and online learning website to be, in his words, “effective, accessible, and affordable. We have the best instructors, an affordable price of $10 per hour, and the benefit of teaching the best curriculum around.”

The classes themselves are also different, exclaims Sharma: “The classes differ from traditional online classes in that there is real interaction. We have textbooks and workbooks that we provide, and small 6-person virtual classes with face-to-face live video. The child is in their home, but they can see and hear the teacher, and vice-versa, in real time.”

“In other words, it’s a real class” adds Sharma.

While the website has launched with the focus on k-12 math, Sharma also plans to add science and technology based curriculums in the near future, making cybershala.com a well-rounded answer to some of America’s most troubling academic questions.

About Cybershala.com
Cybershala.com inc. is an online educational portal dedicated to bringing the best of international curriculum to the US, and to close the “education gap” between what is taught, and what can be learned. Their first curriculum is the highly successful “Singapore Math”, which they offer via virtual classrooms.
