Debut Author Covers Life Cycle of Black Swallowtail Butterfly in Inspiring New Children’s Book

In her thrilling new children’s book The Caterpillars that Grew… and Grew … and Grew, debut author and illustrator Robin Murray follows the three-year old Maddison as she explores the world through her magical magnifying glass and learns all about the amazing life cycle of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly.

When the Black Swallowtail Butterfly makes its debut each spring, seeking out colorful flowers for nectar, Maddison is able to identify it from its unique wing shape and distinctive black, yellow and cornflower blue markings. After the butterfly lays its eggs on dill, parsley, fennel or carrots, they can see a little caterpillar munch its way out of the egg and start eating. Finally, the caterpillar stops eating and find a place to spin its chrysalis, its cocoon.

And there it rests quietly, hanging by a little silk thread. Several weeks later, an amazing thing happens to Maddison’s surprise. Really close to the chrysalis, she glimpses a little head will poke out and the butterfly come into the world. Still wet, she watches as the new butterfly pumps fluid from its body into the veins of the crumpled wet wings. As the veins fill, the wings expand. Soon, a lovely butterfly stretches its black wings open and shut, practicing for its maiden voyage into the sky as wide-eyed Maddison is filled with awe and wonder about this miraculous transformation.

The ICMA Centre Announces Launch of its Advanced Diploma in Investment Compliance

The ICMA Centre and the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) have announced the most comprehensive programme for compliance professionals currently available in the financial markets – the Advanced Diploma in Investment Compliance.

The new programme builds on the success of the Diploma in Capital Markets, Regulation and Compliance, launched in 2006 by the University of Reading and FINRA, by embedding the most successful UK industry qualification – the CISI Diploma in Investment Compliance – within an enhanced training programme for compliance professionals.

Professor John Board, director of the ICMA Centre commented: “The merging of these qualifications will lead to a cleaner and better defined route to the professional certification and demonstration of competence that is so much in demand following the financial crisis”.

The Centre also offers a compliance finance degree programme titled MSc Capital Markets, Regulation and Compliance which was developed to meet the growing need for compliance trained graduates. Launched in 2006, the degree is attracting a great amount of interest from those already working in the financial markets and pre-experience graduates.

Shelly A. Munoz Selected For Prestigious Space Academy Training for Educators

Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that it has awarded 220 scholarships to its Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program. Teachers f r o m 17 countries and 44 states will attend the program at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama f r o m June 11 to June 23, 2010. This event is one element of the company’s award winning math and science education initiative.

Created in partnership with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in 2004, the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program is designed to help teachers move beyond the standard math and science curriculum with supplemental teaching techniques developed through real-life astronaut training.

Shelly A Munoz, 7th grade life science teacher f r o m Menifee Valley Middle School attended the academy June 11-17 2010. The schedule was packed with various challenges and missions designed to enhance participants’ understanding of space science and exploration. Beyond classroom, laboratory and field training exercises, each teacher also faced physical challenges: a high-performance jet simulation, scenario-based space missions, land and water survival training, and flight dynamics programs.

“Through the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program we have trained more than 1,100 science and math teachers to become more engaging and inspiring educators,” said Thomas Buckmaster, President, Honeywell Hometown Solutions. “This unique hands-on learning experience reinvigorates science, technology, engineering and math education in classrooms around the globe.”

Honeywell Educators participate in 45 hours of professional development, as well as an intensive educator curriculum focused on space science and exploration. Activities include classroom, laboratory and field training exercises, which are linked to U.S. science and math teaching standards. Each teacher will also undergo real-life astronaut training including a high-performance jet simulation, scenario-based space missions, land and water survival training, and a state-of-the-art flight dynamics programs.

“As a teacher I love the idea of exposing students to new experiences. The week at Huntsville gives me plenty of material to do just that in my classroom,” said Steve Chance, 2009 Space Camp alumni. “The frosting-on-the-cake was to spend time with so many dedicated and enthusiastic teachers. That always refreshes me for the new year.”

Each Honeywell Educator receives a full scholarship following a rigorous application and selection process involving competing teachers f r o m around the world. Scholarships include tuition for the six-day program, roundtrip airfare, meals, accommodation and program materials, all underwritten by Honeywell and contributions f r o m Honeywell employees.

“Once again, Honeywell is sending a stellar group of teachers to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and we are honored to have the opportunity to provide them with relevant professional development in science, technology, and mathematics,” said Larry Capps, Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. “Teachers who have participated in previous sessions are now making a difference in classrooms around the world as they inspire the next generation of explorers. We look forward to working with the Honeywell Educator Class of 2010 as we continue our mission.”

Since the program’s inception, Honeywell and its employees have sponsored more than 1,100 scholarships for teachers f r o m 37 countries and 49 U.S. states, to participate in the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy programs.

Alexanders Continues Commitment to Students’ Well-Being

Language Schools Target New Age Groups

For many years, language schools around the world have been targeting those students that are taking a gap year before pursuing higher education at university or that are taking a year-off after completing their studies. Recently, however, a new student profile is emerging. The rise in the number of language schools and students wanting to take language courses has brought about a number of changes within the industry. Language schools have begun to target students of different age groups – from juniors as young as eight years old to seniors over the age of 50.

“I think the pace at which globalisation is taking place has forced people to get out of their comfort zones and explore new places and languages. This has created a new level of interest in learning languages. Though students are still learning languages at the degree or postgraduate level, many others are choosing shorter term courses that help them converse fluently in these languages”, says Teresa Anderson, a linguistic expert. Compared with five years ago, there is also a variety of customised language courses to choose from. Depending on the age group in question, the activities associated with language training also differ. For instance, for teenagers and those about to become teenagers, there are beginner sessions in foreign languages such as French, German, Spanish and Italian. Children can benefit from beginning to learn these languages at summer language camps, which are normally held in a city in the country where the language is spoken. Similarly, there are different courses for students aged 50 and above that combine lessons with sessions on wine-tasting, cuisine or culture associated with the language being taught.

“I always wanted to learn French. However, the needs of my children and my career took priority over my hobbies and interests. After retirement, I realised that I would never get a time like this to do all those things that I wanted to. That is how I decided to move to Lyon for a few months to learn French while trying out living in France”, describes 62-year-old Amy Shriver. “In addition to French courses France‘s wonderfully patient people have helped me gain confidence trying out my rusty French. For studying the French language France is very different from Canada in terms of the dialect I have heard. There is a certain sweetness to the way it is spoken in France.”, adds Shriver’s classmate, Thea Driver. Most students enrolling in language schools are still pursuing their college education. However, the increasing demand for language courses among those about to become teenagers and pensioners is helping this industry to expand.

The pair decided to challenge the assumption that despite the natural development of French over time, “[in] the back of any francophone’s mind is the idea that an ideal, pure French exists somewhere.”

Bullfights ‘Sold Out’ At The Feria De Abril

Weeks before some of the biggest bullfights are to take place in the Andalusian capital of Seville, the tickets for the majority of them have sold out. Organisers of the Feria de Abril 2010 – the annual April Fair of Seville – claim that this year they are expecting a massive surge in tourists.

Bullfighting is the national sport of Spain, and its popularity across the world has been on the rise in the past decade. In the Mediterranean, the practice of sacrificing bulls dates back to prehistoric times. The bullfights of Seville are world famous, with matadors from across Spain and even from foreign shores descending on this Mediterranean holiday spot. The April Fair, the biggest draw of Seville’s tourist calendar, is renowned as the showcase for some of the finest bullfighting traditions in Spain. “The April Fair is traditionally held two weeks after Easter Sunday, and gives tourists a taste of Spanish hospitality at its best. We are normally booked months in advance, and there is hardly a single room available during this time”, says Sevillan hotelier Pablo Casteillos.

The bullfights have for centuries been the main attraction of the Feria de Abril. “If you have a choice of where to see bullfights in Spain, make sure it is in either Seville or Madrid. The Sevillanos are among the most passionate in the country”, claims Jesus Chavez, a bullfighting enthusiast from Mexico.

The Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, one of the oldest buildings in Sevilla, continues the venue for some of the most epic bullfights of the Spanish matador’s lore. The construction of this building is said to have begun as far back as the mid eighteenth century, and is one of the most popular landmarks in Seville. Unusally for a bullring, however, the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza is oval shaped, instead of the traditional circular ring. Along with Ronda, Seville is considered as the “nursery” where modern bullfighting as it is performed today was developed. In earlier centuries, bullfighting was undertaken by matadors on horseback.

Hotel registers show that its not just Spaniards who will be attending the April Fair – many tourists are travelling in from as far as Japan and Australia. Some of them are already in Spain to study Spanish abroad and grasp the flavour and flow of the language well in time for the April Fair. The popularity of bullfights have ensured that Spanish study abroad has become all the rage.

ICMA Centre To Partner CISI And FINRA On Diploma In Investment Compliance

The ICMA Centre at the Henley Business School, The Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) of the US have announced that they have joined forces to support and enhance education, training and certification in financial compliance.

ICMA Centre To Partner CISI And FINRA On Diploma In Investment Compliance

The CISI is the largest and most widely respected professional body for those who work in the securities and investment industry in the UK and abroad. It has developed a suite of well recognised and supported programmes centered around product knowledge and regulation to support practitioners in the financial services industry.

Since 2006, the ICMA Centre and FINRA have developed and offered a highly regarded Diploma in Capital Markets Regulation and Compliance aimed at mid-level securities professionals. With the development of the CISI’s Diploma in Investment Compliance, the industry was faced with two seperately recognised routes to certification, and it was agreed that, by joining forces, the parties can work together to enhance the professional credentials of capital market practitioners in the UK better.

The agreement will mean that those who have already achieved the Diploma in Capital Markets Regulation and Compliance will become members of the CISI and those with a partially completed qualification will receive appropiate exemptions from the jointly supported Diploma in Investment Compliance. In addition, the ICMA Centre will work with the CISI to deliver advanced certification for those who have completed the Diploma in Investment Compliance and whose needs are for expanded coverage of topics required by senior compliance staff on financial institutions.
