The Learning Genome Project unveils a new solution to personalized education through crowd sourcing

Educator Kelly Tenkely invites educators, parents and investors around the world to join in personalizing education.

Due to an increased disenfranchisement with the education system, Colorado educator, Kelly Tenkely, recognized the need for a product that would honor the uniqueness of children by personalizing learning. Kelly created the Learning Genome Project to fulfill this need.

“Every child deserves to be met right where they are in learning, rather than expected to fit a one-size-fits-all solution. In our society, we have managed to customize everything from ringtones to coffee, why should learning be different?” Said the Learning Genome Project creator, Kelly Tenkely.

The Learning Genome makes personalized learning available to children around the world by:
* Gathering information about an individual child including: their unique interests/passions, learning style preferences, multiple intelligence strengths, brain dominance, and maturation level.
* Crowdsourcing the tagging of both free, as well as premium, education resources and curriculum with hundreds of learning attributes (the ‘genes’ of learning).
* Matching resources and curriculum to students, recommending the materials that best meet their needs and creating a custom learning map for each child.
* Utilizing an open API so that schools, parents, and districts can build additional functionality to meet their specific needs.

This is the Learning Genome Project’s free “hub” that makes personalized learning available to every child.

Said Kelly, “Every child, regardless of their economic situation, deserves an education that is tailored to them. Society benefits when we help kids learn how to best utilize their unique gifts and passions.”

Premium features of the Learning Genome Project will include:
* A student information system
* An e-portfolio
* A teacher and student planner
* Blogging tools
* An e-learning center
* An individual learning map for each child

The premium features will work seamlessly with the Learning Genome hub giving students, teachers, and parents a complete solution to personalized learning.

The Learning Genome Project is seeking crowd-sourced funding through Indiegogo and will use the $85,000 raised to begin programming. The project has 45 days to raise the funds and can be found here: http://www.indiegogo.com/thelearninggenomeproject?c=home&a=1232629

In addition to her work on the Learning Genome Project, Kelly Tenkely is an educator, a prolific education blogger, and created a new educational model. This model is put into practice at Anastasis Academy, a school that Kelly co-founded that is just beginning its 2nd year in operation.

Himalayan Education Systems is in talks with top publishers in various countries to sell its first product

Himalayan Education Systems Pvt. Ltd. a pioneer company, whose aim is to revolutionize the current educational system, is on target to surpass the US dollar 100 billion revenue in the first year of operations, says CEO Prashant Kangutkar.

As per the business plan of Himalayan Education Systems it has already completed their first step. In less than one week their first product ‘Learning Alphabets’ has attracted interest from several top publishers and educational products distributors for its copyrights.

Himalayan Education Systems’ CEO Prashant Kangutkar says “The company is in negotiations to sell the copyrights with several market leading publishers and the top educational products distributors from various countries”.

‘Learning Alphabets’ in English Language is the first product, it has been developed using “Permanent Impact Method”. This method also developed by Himalayan Education Systems Pvt. Ltd. is based on scientific principles of psychology and the way our mind learns.

The “Permanent Impact Method” uses the four basic principles of learning and memorizing; Visualization, Association, Repetition and Effective Listening. Like all Himalayan Education Systems Pvt. Ltd.’s products ‘Learning Alphabets’ also has a global application.

Himalayan Education Systems Pvt. Ltd. is offering worldwide rights in 164 countries for this product at 100 billion US Dollars. Copyrights can also be purchased on a country-wise basis, where price negotiations can be considered.

Following their successful launch of ‘Learning Alphabets’ Himalayan Education Systems is also ready to launch its community welfare site: www.homesinmumbai.com.

‘Learning Rhymes’ is the second product Himalayan Education Systems is developing. It is generally seen that almost all the news in newspapers or news channels are reporting negative and destructive happenings. Even in the movies, films which are like Titanic and Jurassic Park, which picturise destructive scenes are the most popular. This may be because of the fact that the rhymes that we are learning generations on generations are destructive or creating negative emotions. E.g. Jack& Jill, London Bridge is falling down, Humpty Dumpty – destructive, Johnny, Johnny – learning to say lies. If we change the rhymes from negative emotions to positive emotions, there will be marked changes and transformations in our lives.

Himalayan Education Systems Pvt. Ltd. have developed optimistic rhymes, that take into account factors to create a positive impact in the minds of kids. This is done, without compromising on the ‘fun’ of learning. These rhymes will transform the attitude of mankind.

Last but not least, Himalayan Education Systems has prepared another product called“Success Formula” which has been developed by a Himalayan master. This product will help people in knowing how to achieve success or how to achieve goals. The product will also be marketed as all other Himalayan Education Systems products; the company will be selling the copyrights of the ‘Success Formula”. The digital learning revolution

Schools around the world are starting to proactively adopt mobile learning programs and initiatives, establish or upgrade their broadband infrastructures and also replace traditional textbooks with digital textbooks at an unprecedented rate. Top online learning institutions such as www.learning.com and www.epals.com have created eLearning material which has revolutionized the global education industry.

It is estimated by respected research organizations that in the K-12 (Primary and Secondary) educational sector alone, there will be a need for in excess of 200 million Tablet computers and over 400 million Smartphones within the next 3-5 years. This is not including the huge need and demand in developing countries and underdeveloped areas of countries such as China, India and Brazil, which affects hundreds of millions of school-aged children and teens.

Explosion in educational demand for eLearning solutions.

Texas Students To Receive State-Of-The-Art Supplemental Science Learning Materials

Students from 5th through 12th grade will, this school year, have internet learning assistance to improve their science grades.

In June, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) had panels of assessors reviewing internet learning submissions from a number of companies. The subject matter review experts on these panels determined which submissions were compliant with the new science Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) statements, which include 5th through 8th grade as well as high school Biology, Chemistry, Physics and IPC. Following the reviews the Commissioner, Robert Scott, recommended a list for adoption by the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE). On July 22, 2011 the SBOE voted to adopt a number of submissions. From the adopted list, schools can elect to purchase access to the software that they feel will suit their students best.

For students, these interactive learning programs will include; virtual experiments, animated simulations and instantly marked assessments, all designed to motivate students to explore the world of science.

In the present economic climate it must be good news that this dynamic learning material is available to Texas students at a fraction of the cost of traditional textbooks.

One of the systems adopted has been created by Texas entrepreneur, Tim Brown.

Tim, the President of Technical Laboratory Systems, has funded a partnership between his Texas-based team and a world leading company in the design of e-learning materials, to produce learning programs for all eight grade levels that are totally compliant with the new science TEKS*.

It is Tim’s opinion that this new TEA initiative creates a real possibility that more Texas students will succeed in school science and then choose to follow careers in science, technology or engineering.

Tim says;

“As a provider of technical education equipment to Texas schools and colleges for more than thirty years, I have been saddened to see the decline in the number of quality students opting for careers in technology and engineering. Middle and High School science is the bedrock for college studies in science, technology and engineering. Science teachers, who do their utmost to motivate students, will find that difficult task so much easier with this software. It was a logical step for me to invest in new technology to improve the prospects of our young students. Here in Texas we have world leading companies in all the technological areas, if we cannot provide them with the skilled and innovative workforce that they require, they will be forced to go elsewhere.”

Academics have lobbied hard for our policymakers to address the state’s declining SAT scores and maybe their message is being heard. Perhaps this new initiative by the TEA will go some way to ease the concerns of many in Texas, that the present financial constraints will damage the prospects for our schoolchildren.

How School Prepares You for Success

Many intelligent and well-educated women make the mistake of assuming that they are not prepared for success. They think they do not how to succeed because they do not realize how school prepares you for success.

If you have successfully completed your high school and college education you are well prepared for success. It is not just the knowledge that school gives, it also gives you valuable experience.

The most important thing we learn in school is hard work. The most successful students in school are often not the brightest girls but the hardest working. In many cases average people who work and study hard are the best students. The same thing occurs in real life, the most successful women in many offices are those who work hard not the smartest or most capable professionals.

Another lesson you can learn from school is dedication. Persons who dedicate themselves to class work and study often succeed even if they have hard time understanding the lessons. Women who dedicate themselves to their professions and work and study hard will often succeed even if they lack knowledge.

School also teaches you how to find the knowledge that you need. The study skills you learned in school can help you in the office. In school you learned how to find knowledge and apply it to your studies. In the office you can find knowledge and apply it to your job. The most successful professionals in today’s world are often not the smartest but the best informed. Anybody who studies can be well informed about almost any subject.

The final way how school prepares you for success is through socialization and networking. The most successful students are those who are most involved in the school community – the people who participate in the clubs and the sports. The most successful professionals in the real world are those who participate in their communities and professions.

Persons who are willing to network are more likely to succeed. That means you need to be involved just as you were when you were in school. There are many organizations such as the National Association of Professional Women or NAPW that can provide you with networking opportunities. Getting out and getting involved will lead to friendships and contacts that can advance your career.

Those who can remember how school prepares you for success are prepared to succeed in the professional world. Those who do not will fail and spend their days feeling sorry for themselves.

Safetyshop Encourages Schools to Prepare for Summer Games and Sports Days with Line Marking Equipment Deals

Workplace safety equipment specialist, Safetyshop, has heralded the start of the summer and sunnier weather with a reminder to schools and sports clubs to mark out sports courts and playgrounds with the help of line marking equipment and paint.

The UK’s leading safety products manufacturer has recommended that schools, councils and other educational institutions get ready for the summer as children will be playing outside both on playgrounds and playing fields.

Having clearly marked playgrounds can be for sports courts for sports such as tennis, netball or basketball or they could even be used for other traditional games such as hopscotch.

In order to ensure that the line markings last a long time and don’t require the same money to be spent every year schools could use the line marking paint and line marking equipment available from Safetyshop.

Line marking in schools isn’t just for on the playground either, car parks and restricted areas can be marked out to prevent children from walking into dangerous and hazardous areas.

Ed Barnes, Product Manager at Safetyshop commented, “line marking is often thought of as something industrial and factory businesses need to consider, but a large percentage of our customer base for these products is in fact schools and the public sector”

“Effective use of our Easyline products, available for purchase and delivery online, can help mark out a wide range of floor markings whether it’s for fun or for important safety issues”

“The Easyline products have been chosen by Safetyshop due to their sharp appearance and their durability, ensuring schools or businesses won’t have to frequently repaint lines”

The range of line marking equipment is just one of the many products available for businesses as well as safety signs, protective clothing and many other important workplace health and safety products.

Education in America: Homeschooling on the Rise

The homeschooling movement continues to gain momentum as home-educated students and graduates demonstrate success academically and socially.

Gray, TN, March 7, 2011, The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine, LLC — Boasting an increase of 74% since 1999 and now in its fourth decade, the modern homeschooling movement is gaining followers at an astonishing rate. Homeschool, for the most part an unfamiliar term only thirty years ago when the movement began, has become a household word. U.S. educators from both public and private school arenas are very much aware of the movement and its impact, and today popular media frequently make mention of “homeschoolers,” from characters in CBS’s #1 show, NCIS, to homeschool grads who appear as contestants on shows such as Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Homeschooling has firmly established itself as a mainstream education alternative.

Homeschoolers are here to stay, because homeschooling works:

• Homeschoolers (K–12) score an average 37 points above the national average on standardized achievement tests. (HSLDA, 2009)

• “Homeschool students possess higher ACT scores, grade point averages (GPAs) and graduation rates when compared to traditionally-educated students.” (Journal of College Admission, citing a 2010 survey of homeschoolers)

• Homeschool grads are “more likely to vote, volunteer for political campaigns, participate in boycotts or write letters to the editor. . . . Seventy-one percent of homeschool graduates participate in an ongoing community service activity compared to 37% of U.S. adults of similar ages.” (NHERI) Homeschoolers are definitely impacting the political scene, as evidenced not only by the recent election of Jaime Herrera, formerly a homeschooler, as a U.S. Representative (R-WA) but also by the enthusiastic participation of homeschooled students in grassroots organizations such as HSLDA’s Generation Joshua.

• Research conducted by multiple sources has found “the home educated to be developing as well or better socially, emotionally, and psychologically than institutionally schooled children and youth.” Homeschool graduates are excelling in their occupations, contributions to their communities’ welfare, and their own families.

The U.S. economy is benefiting too. For example, homeschooling families obviously are committed to equip their students to keep abreast of technological advancements, as statistics show that the use of computer technology in their families nearly tripled that of the average U.S. family, based on national norms. As homeschoolers graduate and enter the workforce, U.S. industries who hire these well-prepared, independent thinkers are thriving.

And there are even more winners—taxpayers benefit as well, because home educators receive no government funding, thus reducing the burden on taxpayers. “If there were 2 million homeschool students in the United States in 2009 and the direct per-pupil expenditure was $10,100, then the homeschool community saved American taxpayers $20.4 billion . . . .” (Dr. Brian Ray, NHERI).

Flat Classroom Project Creates Globally Minded Students at Yew Chung International School of Beijing

Once a week, Coco Yu walks into her Year 4 classroom at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing), logs onto a computer and starts communicating with other children her age who are located in schools stretching from England to India.

Yu is one of dozens of students at YCIS Beijing who are participating in a global collaborative project that joins together primary students from around the world via the Internet and Web 2.0 technologies, including Wikispaces and Ning, an online service that allows members to create social networks.

The project is called Flat Classroom. It is part of an emerging trend in internationally aware schools, like YCIS Beijing, that embrace a holistic and full-rounded educational approach to work collaboratively with others around the world in order to create students who are competitive and globally-minded. One of the main goals of the project is to “flatten” or lower the classroom walls so that two or more classes are joined virtually to become one large classroom.

“In Flat Classroom, we work a lot with computers and we go to Wiki, and we type what we do in Beijing. Maybe we Skype, and we talk to other children around the world, for example, we have a school in Mumbai, a school in England and Mill Creek and the US,” Yu, who is 9years old, said.

YCIS Beijing teachers who take part in the program say they can immediately see the perceptions of their students about the world and their place in it change as a result of participation in the project, which incorporates themes and lesson plans from “The World is Flat,” a ground-breaking book authored by the New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. Students also work collaboratively on projects with their peers located in different schools around the world. On February 21st at 8am, students used Skype to video chat with the primary students and parents at a US primary school who were attending their back-to-school night. It was an exciting link for both primary classes involved who exclaimed cheers when the video connection occurred, followed by a question and answer period that bounced back-and-forth between times zones.

“Of course, students have discovered similarities between themselves and other students located at the other participating schools,” said Primary Year 4 teacher, Heather Davis.

“They also note the differences as well. It is through these similarities and differences that our students have expressed the most learning. They find it fascinating that the same hobbies, food or entertainment enjoyed by them is enjoyed by other students as well. Conversely, they are intrigued by the holidays and traditions of different countries and are surprised when preconceived notions they had about other countries are challenged and clarified with reality.”

The Flat Classroom Project is incorporated mostly during IT time at YCIS Beijing but also crosses over into other subject areas, including English, math, history and Chinese. Students, for example, learn how to correspond in English with their counterparts in different countries or study the history of the countries in which their peers are living.

From February 25 – 27, a special Flat Classroom Conference will be held in Beijing. It will include students and educators discussing the future of education through the integration of technologies, including wikis, blogs, social networking and multi-media storytelling, into learning environments.

Largest Homeschool Blogging Community Upgrades to a Whole New Way of Blogging Life

Recently HomeschoolBlogger.com (HSB)—the world’s largest and free homeschool blog site—got a clean, fresh, look with exciting new features, by implementing an important software upgrade.

According to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine® publisher/owner Gena Suarez, “The plan behind the change is to link great blogging with the ever-expanding homeschool community to usher back in the ‘blogging craze’ that hit when HomeschoolBlogger was launched in 2005. It was a lot of work, we pushed forward, and now we’re doing it. This is a major upgrade, using the popular WordPress platform and will mean a whole new way of blogging life for our members at HomeschoolBlogger.com.”

During August ALONE, HomeschoolBlogger.com received thirteen million page views! One of the draws to HSB is the ease in discovering new blogs and connecting with those of similar homeschool and family interests. This online community has a safety-net feel unlike other blog sites, where using a random blog button could reveal undesirable content.

HomeschoolBlogger’s Senior Editor, Kristen Hamilton, oversees the site. She and other authors contribute homeschool-related posts. She assists members and keeps an eye on new blogs to identify inappropriate content.

Kristen states: “HomeschoolBlogger is comprised of a large group of bloggers who make HSB their home base. This is the largest upgrade in our five-year history and makes the community even stronger with its exciting new features.” Here’s a look at some new HomeschoolBlogger.com features:
• Intuitive user interface—A “What You See Is What You Get” editor works seamlessly with the HTML editor. Also advanced image uploading and in-browser image editing.
• Widgits—Add tools like search bars or calendars by clicking and dragging.
• Backups—Click a button to create backups with instant saving capacity.
• Spam protection—Integrated blacklist and open proxy checker to manage and eliminate comment spam.
• Pages—Manage non-blog content easily.

• Password protected posts—Hide individual posts from public view by assigning passwords.

There’s even more exciting news to share: HomeschoolBlogger.com FREE classes with vibrant topics designed for homeschoolers. Over 3,500 people have signed up for these classes since the launch in July. Recent classes included “Think Biblically, Live Godly, and Serve Practically,” “Ten Stumbling Blocks to Writing,” and “Solving Your Science Struggles”; additional topics will be announced soon!
