This three-year project, which ends this year, is detailed on the ICMA website and builds upon the work the same team carried out during 2004/5 for another ESRC project entitled “Modern Finance in the Middle Ages? Advance Contracts for the Supply of Wool”. For outputs, interested parties can visit the UK Data Archive, study number 5325, at www.data-archive.ac.uk.

Henley Business School Has Launched A New Customer Management Safari As Part Of Its Executive Education Programme

Aimed at business leaders who wish to re-address the way their organisation responds to – and engages with – their customers, this programme concentrates on deepening an organisation’s understanding of its current and future customers. It also considers the impact of organisational climate on customer satisfaction and retention and the important role of people in the value creation process.

The Customer Management Safari will help successful participants understand and use a range of techniques to discover deep, rare, meaningful insights about customers that can form the basis of competitive advantage. The Henley Human Resources Centre Of Excellence At Henley Business School Has Just Completed New Research To Discover What Organisations Want Right Now From Their HR Function

The Henley HR Centre of Excellence focuses on applied research to help HR clients answer questions like: ‘What does a business want from HR?’, ‘What does a good HR person look like?’ and ‘How do you develop great HR capability?’.

The new research showed that the HR function faces both great challenges and opportunities in understanding the business, its challenges and adding value, to provide:

– Operational efficiency in HR activities: quickly slimming down existing processes and policies in line with cutbacks and finding creative ways of delivering lower cost alternatives that are not too different in quality.

– Balance between the short and long term: with CEOs in survival mode, it is imperative that HR manages the tension between saving money now and the need to identify good people, place them in the right jobs, develop them and keep them.

– Focus on what is important: HR must ensure decisions are fact based so that business performance is balanced with maintaining business reputation for both corporate social responsibility and employer branding.

– Real emotional support to the organisation: HR has to step up and implement sound, consistent strategies to help everyone through the lows of the recession, managing not just the process, but also the sentiment, the environment, and some of the messaging that goes round.

The research analysis also shows that only a minority of HR professionals are stepping up to the challenge of the recession by focusing on adding value to the business and dealing with people with integrity and respect.

The Henley Business School Advanced Human Resources Business Partner programme is based on current new studies like this along with other real-world business research into what is required from HR today. The Advanced HR Business Partner programme is intended to provide HR professionals looking to move to more senior roles with the necessary leadership skills to understand and contribute to overall business management; to help them focus on aligning the HR agenda with the strategic business imperatives of their organisations, on deriving competitive advantage for the business through delivery of that agenda and on developing their own strategic leadership skills.

The Advanced HR Business Partner programme is part of Henley Business School’s portfolio of executive development programmes aimed at helping organisations to develop effective leadership and the right calibre of managers to survive and thrive in today’s turbulent economic times. The extensive executive education syllabus includes both customised and tailored qualification programmes which are highly practical, designed to create immediate impact and make a real difference back in the work environment.

Escuela Del Sol Has Hired A Design Firm To Help Communicate Its Unique Brand Of Creative Education To Its Constituents

Albuquerque’s Escuela del Sol had a problem. Even after 40 years of continuous operation, there was growing confusion among parents as to what the Montessori system offered their children, how it differed f r o m other educational methods, and what results they should expect. The lack of communication was making it difficult to maintain, much less grow, enrollment, and had caused some dissatisfaction with currently enrolled families.

Now if Montessori schools know how to do anything, it is how to prepare kids to be creative thinkers and problem solvers. So the school’s board decided to practice what they teach. They put on their thinking caps, thought like a business and came up with a business solution-applying the very same traits they strive to nurture in their students.

This creative bit of problem solving led them to Ripe Inc., an Albuquerque-based design firm that specializes in building brands and identities for businesses. Normally. But the chance to work with such a forward thinking school was too good an opportunity to pass up. Ripe had to be equally creative in taking on a branding assignment f r o m a school. But they did their homework well.

Working closely with the school they developed an engaging, informative, visual and verbal communication system to clarify and deliver the brand message. The message was developed through intensive workshops in which consensus about the key attributes of the school’s brand were uncovered and documented. The analysis and evaluation became an internal brand reference guide book provided to all faculty and staff members-so there’s common understanding and consistent language when communicating the Escuela del Sol brand.

It also became the conceptual platform for developing the graphics libraries, website, messaging system, and electronic template that facilitates the school’s unique educational approach. And for developing its award-winning print collateral as well. The school’s new logo & stationery design has been s e l e c t e d to appear in PRINT’s 2009 Regional Design Annual. Planned advertising campaigns will focus on specific challenges-like boosting enrollment, and increasing parent engagement in the school’s educational process.

Escuela del Sol has made it their business to enhance their communications and their profile within the community. And they expect business to be good.

Marylhurst University Adds New Online MBA Curriculum Focused Around Sustainability

Marylhurst University will expand its graduate program this summer and offer a new online MBA in sustainable business to meet a growing need in one of the few industries that is adding, not cutting jobs, thanks in part to the 2009 federal stimulus bill.

Marylhurst University

Concentrations within the new degree program will address the most pertinent sustainability topics: renewable energy, green development, natural resources and public policy. Inaugural classes in the new program begin June 22, and enrollment is underway.

With $62 billion in direct green spending, plus another $20 billion in tax incentives allocated in the 2009 stimulus bill, jobs in sustainability are growing in almost every industry. The bill specifically allocates $500 million for the creation of green jobs. In addition, many states are creating their own green job initiatives.

“We have collaborated with industry leaders to create a relevant and compelling curriculum in sustainability,” said David Plotkin, Marylhurst University provost. “Each course has been written to incorporate the important issues pertaining to the green movement. Being in Portland, one of America’s greenest cities, gives us a strategic advantage to be a leader in this area.”

The new MBA concentration in sustainability becomes the second concentration (joining real estate) available solely online at Marylhurst. The university has the highest combined on-ground and online enrollment of any MBA program in Oregon. The program’s small, seminar-style classes provide a strong grounding in ethics, teamwork and communication to students preparing to become leaders in today’s fast-paced global marketplace.

As a longtime education provider to “non-traditional” students, Marylhurst was among the first to offer online classes (since 1996), and the university is recognized by the Council for Adult & Experiential Learning for its “comprehensively effective practices in serving adult learners.” This includes a 2004 CAEL Institutional Service Award for “outstanding commitment to the expansion of lifelong learning opportunities and for innovative efforts to improve access and quality in academic programs for adult learners.”

With a multimillion-dollar campus-wide reconstruction completed over the past decade, Marylhurst is undergoing tremendous growth, though that hasn’t changed the university’s commitment to providing a personalized education to all students.

“While the student population is growing, we are still maintaining small class sizes, adhering to high faculty standards and staying true to our commitment to developing ethical leaders,” said Mary Bradbury-Jones, accelerated online program director.

Portland State University Honors University Of Cincinnati Professor Edward J. Latessa With Hatfield Scholar Award

The Mark O. Hatfield School of Government honored Dr. Edward J. Latessa with the Hatfield Scholar Award. Dr. Latessa has led a distinguished career in the field of Criminal Justice and is currently a Professor and Head of the Division of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati. He has co-authored seven books including Corrections in the Community and Corrections in America. Additionally, Dr. Latessa has directed over 100 funded research projects, including studies of juvenile justice programs, drug courts, and intensive supervision programs.

Senator Mark O. Hatfield, for whom the award is named, said “I admire [Dr. Latessa’s] dedication to public service. Oregon is a state that values new ideas that serve the cause of social justice and consequently, we are proud that he would accept this award.”

Dr. Latessa’s intrepid perspective on academic practice has inspired the creation of two highly reputable online Criminal Justice degree programs. In 2001, the University of Cincinnati launched a Master of Science in Criminal Justice to great success. When approached about the possibility of launching a Bachelor’s degree Dr. Latessa recommended Portland State University’s own Division of Criminology and Criminal Justice as the ideal candidate and in 2005 this recommendation came to fruition.

At the award ceremony, Dr. Latessa said “I have dedicated most of my career to trying to improve programs, trying to make us a little more effective. I am happy if I can get one program, make it more effective, and change a few peoples’ lives. Many times the difference between us and the people that are incarcerated is a very small, thin line. It’s important that we understand that they are human beings, they are citizens, they are our neighbors that are incarcerated. It’s important to work hard to see that what we know works its way into the field.”

About the Hatfield Scholar Award
The Hatfield Scholar Award, named after the distinguished former Governor and Senator from Oregon, Mark O. Hatfield is offered to exceptional scholars whose careers best exemplify the Hatfield ideals of public interest, scholarship, public service, civil and human rights, social justice, and peace. Bigmouthmedia reveal that the majority of recent Scottish university graduates feel that higher education is failing to adequately prepare leavers for life in the real world and opportunities in emerging industries

Bigmouthmedia has revealed that the majority of recent Scottish university graduates feel that higher education should do more to connect students to opportunities in emerging industries and that universities are failing to adequately prepare leavers for life in the real world.

According to a wrap up of 2008 graduate intelligence, harvested by bigmouthmedia from a series of recruitment events, the majority of Scotland’s class of 2008 believed that the education system is not properly aiding the transition from student life. Some 56% of the recent graduates polled believed that university had not sufficiently prepared them for life in the business world.

The research revealed a worrying lack of awareness about opportunities in 21st Century industries. Over 46.3% of those surveyed said they knew little about opportunities in digital marketing and felt that universities should help increase awareness of such emerging industries.

Some 39% also believed they should have been told more about the search marketing sector during their time in higher education.

Respondents revealed a tendency to use online media to supplement gaps in the curriculum. Some 89% said that they had learned more about search engine optimisation and online marketing reading a range of industry blogs such as Search Engine Land and Search Engine Watch.

The research also revealed that a career in search marketing is beginning to appeal to university leavers from disciplines not typically attracted to the sector. While 24.4% of the recent graduates enquiring about a career in the industry had marketing/advertising degrees and 29.3% had been studying ICT/Computing, the clear majority – 46.3% – had studied unrelated subjects.

The results indicated that this broadening attraction could in part be due to the perception of the digital marketing as a ‘hot’ industry, with an overwhelming 80% stating that they believed the sector offered a more glamorous career than television marketing.

The graduate groups questioned also revealed a preference for remaining North of the border after leaving university. Some 95% of the graduates questioned said they would prefer to pursue a high-tech or marketing career in Scotland if possible.

See the results at: www.bigmouthmedia.com/live/articles/graduate-survey-2008.asp

Smarter Toddler Nursery and Preschool in New York City has announced a ban on the phrase Terrible Twos

Smarter Toddler Nursery and Preschool in New York City has announced a ban on the phrase Terrible Two’s insisting that the term encourages and excuses bad behavior in Toddlers. “A two year old who people refer to as a Terrible Two may need either more physical activity, more stimulating academic challenges or simply more 1-on-1 attention,” said Jessica Collins, spokesperson for the school, “At Smarter Toddler we don’t believe in the phrase Terrible Two’s. What we do believe in is giving a child a combination of attention and special activities that help to keep their minds off of the need to begin what some would describe as bad behavior. Smarter Toddler does that by providing children with a warm, loving, fun environment that focuses on the artistic, cultural and social development of each child”.

The teachers and management of Smarter Toddler would like the support of not onlyparents with children at their center but also parents, guardians and teachers everywhere to not use the term Terrible Two’s.

“Educators and psychologists have proved that negative statements are more likely to encourage negative behavior in not only children but adults also,” said Ms. Collins. “Call Johnny a bad boy and your likely to get a bad boy. Instead of saying Terrible Two, using the term Terrific Two is much more positive and likely to encourage and expect good behavior in a child”.

About Smarter Toddler:
Smarter Toddler is a Daycare Center and Preschool on Manhattan’s Upper West Side founded by parents of gifted toddlers who wanted a progressive preschool with an advanced arts-based curriculum that their own children could benefit from, hence the name. It has long been proven that a child’s brain is like a dry sponge capable of absorbing knowledge at a much faster rate than an adult’s. As a result, at Smarter Toddler you’re never too young to begin learning. Since the firstSmarter Toddler location at 89th street became popular a new location at 55th street and 9th avenue near Lincoln Center is planned for September 2007.
