CSI Reduces Registration Rate for 2013 Academic Research Conference

On April 17-19, 2013,The Center for Scholastic Inquiry will host an international academic research conference in Scottsdale, Arizona — an event to inspire, encourage, and unite thought leaders and new thinkers in the fields of education, business and behavioral sciences. The Center for Scholastic Inquiry International Academic Research Conference Call for Papers Now Open

The Center for Scholastic Inquiry is pleased to announce its inaugural academic research conference on April 17-19, 2013, in Scottsdale, Arizona. The conference highlights academic research in education, business and behavioral sciences to support superior, break through scholarship and establish a platform to recognize and celebrate luminaries, pioneers and practitioners in the professions of education, business and behavioral sciences.

The conference, which is being held at a luxury desert resort, will be preceded by a conference-eve reception followed by three days of education, business and behavioral sciences track breakout sessions, morning keynote addresses, and networking gatherings. British Lagging Behind Europe’s Multilingual Labour Force

Language school UIC Languages is calling for a nationwide effort to get British workers speaking a second language. The push comes after figures reveal that almost a million UK businesses are losing out lost to European competitors because they can’t find enough good quality graduates who speak European languages.

‘Where do you imagine it’s likely the recruitment will be for graduate jobs – a German or French or Italian who speaks English fluently as well as their own language or an English graduate who doesn’t speak anything except English?’ asked a spokesperson for UIC Languages.

Since languages were made non-statutory by the last government in 2004, the number of students taking language GCSEs has been steadily declining – falling from 61 per cent in 2005 to 44 per cent in 2010.

The result, according to the UIC spokesperson, is that: ‘British graduates don’t see the need to bother’ – a fatal mistake in the current economic climate. As well as multilingualism being an aid to business communication and an indicator of a person’s internationalist outlook, ’employers see the ability to learn a second language as good in itself.’

Learning English This Summer At SGI Couldn’t Be More Exciting

Bristol Language Centre

The Bristol Language Centre is a modern, innovative and dynamic learning hub. A new graffiti wall, unveiled as part of a series of renovations to the building, was created by local urban artists to depict some of the famous locales of Bristol. Seonaid Birkett, the school’s director, commented that the mural highlighted the school’s innovation while reflecting the urban art scene synonymous with Bristol.

The mural was created by artists Tom Deams and Kelp, who used the branding colours of the Bristol Language Centre as their tonal palette and the city of Bristol as their inspiration. Bristol is a beautiful port city with a fascinating history and a lively cultural, arts and music scene. Many English language students choose to come to Bristol as a new and interesting alternative location to study in the UK.

As well as the completion of the BLC graffiti wall, the Bristol urban arts scene is set to receive two further boosts from artists of the city. Bristol-based graffiti artist Banksy will be publishing a new retrospective this month, and the city is also preparing itself to host the Upfest urban art celebration over the Jubilee weekend at the start of June.

You Are an Acceptable Level of Threat is the title of the new publication by Banksy set to hit bookshops later this month. Banksy was born in Bristol and his work is very much the product of the dynamic underground arts and music scene boasted by the city.

A big part of this underground scene is the urban arts celebration that is Upfest. Starting on the 2 June, the city will see two miles of its streets taken over by international artists, who will be painting live to create the equivalent of 20,000 square feet of artwork.

The graffiti wall at BLC is also part of a larger project. The English language centre has recently been refurbished in a way that owes more to recent technology than street art. International students studying at BLC now have access to the latest interactive learning aids that are installed in modern, bright classrooms. Electronic whiteboards, screens and projectors are complemented by a new cafeteria, two modern multimedia centres offering unlimited free internet access and several break-out areas with refreshment facilities where students can relax and chat to friends.

Making Education History: Beyond the Status Quo

The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine, LLC — With more than 2 million K–12 students in the U.S. currently being educated at home, the popularity of homeschooling continues to rise. Since 1999, the number of homeschooled students has increased by a staggering 75%, mostly in response to increasing dissatisfaction and frustration with the public school system.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Education recently documented less than a 1% increase in enrollment of K–12 public school students nationwide, but the homeschool population increased by a whopping 7%. Almost 4% (and growing) of our nation’s school-age children are being educated at home.

Research has proven that parents are more than capable of successfully educating their children at home. Surveys of homeschoolers’ academic successes consistently reveal that they score, on average, at the 65th to 89th percentile on standardized academic achievement tests, compared to a national school average at the 50th percentile. Interestingly, according to a recent, nationwide survey of homeschoolers commissioned by the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), achievement gaps that are “well-documented in public school between boys and girls, parents with lower incomes, and parents with lower levels of education are not found among homeschoolers.”

Recent studies laud homeschoolers’ academic success, noting their significantly higher ACT-Composite scores as high schoolers and higher grade point averages as college students. Yet surprisingly, the average expenditure for the education of a homeschooled child, per year, is $500 to $600, compared to an average expenditure of $10,000 per child, per year, for public school students.

More than ever, homeschool grads are scoring points with college recruiters. Compared to the overall population of college students, homeschool grads achieve a higher retention rate and a higher graduation rate as they pursue education beyond the training provided by their parents. Dori Staehle, in her February 2012 article, notes that schools such as Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, and Duke are actively recruiting homeschoolers—and offering them scholarships. She cites the characteristics of homeschoolers who have gotten their attention: “These students tend to be exceptionally bright, motivated, and mature. Far from being sheltered and shy (the typical stereotypes), homeschoolers’ applications reflect students who have traveled, taken risks, and studied some pretty intense topics.”

National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) survey results confirm that homeschoolers are “engaged, at least as much as are others, in activities that predict leadership in adulthood” and are “satisfied that they were home educated.” Homeschool graduates are more civically engaged than the general public and demonstrate “healthy social, psychological, and emotional development, and success into adulthood.” Apparently homeschoolers are getting excellent grades on their report cards—both academically and socially!

Based on recent data, researchers such as Dr. Brian Ray (NHERI.org) “expect to observe a notable surge in the number of children being homeschooled in the next 5 to 10 years. The rise would be in terms of both absolute numbers and percentage of the K to 12 student population. This increase would be in part because . . . [1] a large number of those individuals who were being home educated in the 1990s may begin to homeschool their own school-age children and [2] the continued successes of home-educated students.”

Dr. Gary Knowles, a professor at the University of Michigan, conducted a survey of homeschool grads who are now successful adults. He found that “an amazing 96% said if they could do it all over again they would want to be homeschooled. Not a single one was unemployed or on welfare. That is pretty impressive.”

Homeschooling parents have chosen to educate their own kids at home for a myriad of reasons, and many say they are in it for the long haul. It’s a matter of conviction and dedication. And, judging from the current state of the public school system, the answer for thousands of parents in this country is clear and simple: homeschool them.

Are homeschoolers “making education history”? For sure. As did the homeschooling parents of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln, Booker T. Washington, Thomas Edison, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Andrew Wyeth, equipped with parental insight and motivation to see their children succeed academically and socially, today’s homeschooling parents are making education history.

Language School Encourages Art Appreciation

As part of UIC Languages’ wider commitment to providing students with a cultural education alongside academic studies, staff at the award-winning school have been encouraging students to develop a taste for the fine arts.

The school’s website describes the range of ‘excellent exhibitions’ which have opened in the city during the spring term and encourages their London-based students to ‘take a break from studying English this weekend and enjoy some famous artists’ shows’.

Recommended exhibitions include that of Yayoi Kusama at The Tate Modern. Kusama is a contemporary Japanese artist described by the Tate Modern show’s curator, Frances Morris, as ‘one of the most interesting, arresting and intriguing artists alive today’.

An exhibition of Lucien Freud’s paintings at the National Portrait Gallery is also highly recommended. Freud, who died last year, was one of the most influential and important artists of his generation. The exhibition features 130 works from private collections and museums throughout the world.

For something a little more abstract, Tate Britain’s major new exhibition, Picasso and Modern British Art, will not fail to disappoint. Students can enjoy more than 60 of Picasso’s spectacular artworks, including sublime works such as The Three Dancers and Weeping Woman.

For language students who live outside of London, UIC Languages is still able to provide programmes of teaching. The school’s dedicated network of teachers means that for those hoping to find French courses Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Glasgow are all possible places in which to study.

CompTIA Testing Centers Moving Exclusively to Pearson VUE Testing Centers

Get Certified 4 Less, a provider of IT certification vouchers for students, IT professionals, and corporations alike, is announcing to its customers an upcoming change that will affect the testing exam center options for all CompTIA exams beginning July 9 th , 2012. Starting July 9, 2012, CompTIA exams will be held only with Pearson VUE and their worldwide network of over 5,000 testing centers. At that time CompTIA certification exams will no longer be held at Prometric testing centers.

Pearson VUE has been delivering the CompTIA exam since 2003 along with the Prometric Testing Centers. In order to simplify the overall testing experience, Pearson VUE will now be the exclusive deliver of CompTIA exams. This will provide all test takers with one point of contact for all of their CompTIA certifications.

“May 4 th will be the last day that customers will be able to buy CompTIA vouchers from Prometric, and July 8 th will be the last day to register or test for CompTIA certification at a Prometric Center,” said Danielle Spradlin, Marketing Director at Get Certified 4 Less. She continued, “Starting on July 9 th , all unused vouchers from Prometric that have not expired will have to be scheduled and used through Pearson VUE centers. As of today, customers can already purchase CompTIA exam vouchers for use at Pearson VUE exam centers.”

There are currently over 5,000 Pearson VUE exam centers in more than 165 countries. Several hundred of these testing centers are professionally run, full time centers that have the capacity to distribute hundreds of exams securely.

“All the details of the exam will stay the same,” said Danielle Spradlin. “The exams, the fees, and requirements will all be the same, so upcoming test takers need not worry about making any other last minute adjustments.”

Complete University Guide 2013 ranks Lancaster University ninth in the UK

The Complete University Guide for 2013 has finished its research into the best universities in the UK and on 24th April 2012 released the new University League Table, in which Lancaster University ranks in ninth place.

By coming in ninth position Lancaster University is now grouped with the top universities in the UK alongside many prestigious higher education institutions. This leading group has Cambridge University in first place, with the rest of the top 10 including, in order of rank, the London School of Economics, Oxford University, the Imperial College of London, Durham University, the University of St Andrews, the University of Warwick, University College London, Lancaster University and the University of Bath.

A total of nine attributes were used to measure the University League Table’s rankings, including student satisfaction, research funding, entry standards, the ratio of students to staff, academic services spending, overall quality of student facilities, degree results, graduate prospects, and levels of degree completion.

Apart from gaining high scores overall, Lancaster University also achieved exceptional results for its individual dress subjects. Social work came in first place, art and design in second, linguistics in third, drama, dance and cinema in fifth, biological science, geography and environmental science all ranked eighth, and accounting and finance, business studies, general engineering and social policy placed ninth.

All universities were judged on four attributes for degree subjects, which were – student satisfaction, research (including doctoral and postgraduate research), entry standards and graduate prospects.

Lancaster University has recently ranked highly in a number of publications. For instance, the university was ranked ninth in The Times Good University Guide 2012 and seventh out of 120 UK universities in The Guardian’s University Guide 2012. Also, the UK Government’s latest Assessment of Research in 2008 revealed that more than 90 per cent of Lancaster University’s research work can be classed as world leading and that the University has some of the best research subjects in the UK.

Of the University’s latest achievement in the University League Table Professor Mark E. Smith, the Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, said: “Lancaster University is consistently highly ranked in the UK league tables and is established as a world player in research and teaching, which is reflected in our rising global league table position.

“Students who come to Lancaster can be confident of receiving a first class education at an internationally diverse campus.”

Student Accommodation At Lancaster University Ranks Second In The UK

Following the annual Times Higher Education Student Experience survey, Lancaster University’s student accommodation has been ranked second in the whole of the UK.

The Times Higher Education Student Experience survey was conducted by the University of Cambridge and a total of 105 different universities were ranked. All universities were scored on 21 attributes, such as the overall quality of lectures, social life, facilities, the student’s union and many others. For each attribute universities were scored out of seven by its own students, with the total for every university being calculated from these results.

191 students from Lancaster University participated the university’s scoring this year and the university ranked at number 19 for the second year running. The university has received its greatest accolade in recent years, now being set in joint second place for the best student accommodation in the UK, alongside the University of Dundee and the University of Oxford.

And it’s easy to see why the university’s students chose such a high score for its accommodation, as the students’ halls of residence is of a much higher quality than many others in the UK. Students living there can benefit from eco-friendly and energy-efficient technologies that encourage them to live more sustainably, which is a key skill they can then take into later life.

For example, students can refer to real-time energy monitors to keep energy wastage at a minimum. The halls have also been fitted with roof-mounted thermal solar panels that preheat hot water, Passive Infra-Red (PIR) units to control lighting in the halls, and high-end insulation.

“It’s not like a first-year halls of residence,” said Hilary Simmons, the Head of Colleges and Student Life at Lancaster University. “You have this huge vibrancy of second- and third-years organising lots of activities and social events. Keeping these smaller communities within the overall huge university community is really important to us.”

Lancaster University has pioneered an Eco-Residences model that has received much recognition and many awards since its creation. The university uses this model for around 12 per cent of its accommodation stock, which is one of the many reasons why its students are so pleased with their housing.

UIC Languages: Spanish for Scousers

UIC Languages, one of the UK’s largest modern language teaching operations, is celebrating British language education in 2012 – as well as looking forward to the London Olympics and Paralympics to be held in the city later this year.

UIC: In The Year Of The Dragon Mandarin Study Flies High

Leading London language school UIC (United International Languages) today stated that as the Chinese Year of the Dragon gets underway it is already seeing the study of Mandarin flying high. There are more students of Chinese at UIC than ever before and enquiries for places on its courses are at an all-time high.

UIC today claimed that many indicators suggest that the number of students studying Chinese will continue to grow. The cultural presence of China is ever more visible, the influence of China on the global economy and the economic clout of the Yuan are on the increase and there is a growing number of Chinese nationals living in, or visiting, the UK. Over the past decade the college has seen an annual increase in its Mandarin language students, and with the growing importance of the Chinese economy and its increasing cultural presence this trend looks set to continue. UIC teaches its Modern Foreign Language courses, including Chinese, from its centrally located London school, as well as offering teaching to be held in offices and workplaces nationwide and in the homes of private students across the UK. The Confederation of British Industry claims that Chinese is one of the most sought-after languages by British businesses in general. The growing numbers of corporate learning clients requesting UIC Chinese language courses to be held in their offices is testament to this need. In particular UIC have seen a surge in demand from businesses in the finance sector where money is increasingly talking in Chinese tones.

The government in China has done much to promote the global uptake of its language. By the end of the decade it aims to have established over a thousand Confucius Institutes worldwide to help spread the learning of Mandarin.

Official figures from the Confucius Institutes Headquarters suggest that across the globe the number of people learning Chinese is growing at a rate of nearly 2 million people every year and that there are currently over 50 million learners.

Chinese is a notoriously difficult language to learn. It contains four tones, an alien grammar, over 3500 characters and a profusion of homophones. This challenge, however, does not seem to be dampening the enthusiasm of students at UIC where more and more students are saying “Ciao” to more traditional language options like Italian and instead going on a quest to try and tame the dragon that is the Chinese language.

Text Lingo: Languages Change, Education Helps

As languages develop and change, students need to learn these innovations but also benefit from learning the foundations as well. Abbreviations used in text messages are becoming more prevalent, so the need for proper education in languages is becoming more important. Text lingo has its detractors, such as journalist John Humphrys, who has said this new way of communicating is ‘wrecking our language.’ The ambiguity of text speak can be illustrated by the abbreviation LOL, which can mean ‘lots of love’ or ‘laugh out loud.’ This is a prime example of how important traditional education is in the fast-paced world of language development.

A good language teacher will be able to combine tried and tested methods with more modern approaches to learning. As well as taking part in classroom learning, students can discover more about how their chosen language is changing by reading contemporary books. The vocabulary and sentence structure can be compared with novels from earlier periods, to understand how the language has developed over the centuries.

As well as reading, foreign language students should watch current TV shows. Thanks to the internet, you don’t even need to be in the country itself to tune in to local programmes. However, by taking classes in the mother country, such as taking English courses in London, you will get a much better feel for how the language is developing by being amongst local people. New Public Class Fosters Social-Emotional Skills in Children

Mariposa Child Success Programs, a nonprofit organization that promotes the healthy development of children, will be offering a class to the public on how to foster social-emotional competence in children. Promoting Social-Emotional Competence: Managing Behaviors and Improving Performance will begin on February 9, 2012 at the new Union Mill complex in Hampden and will continue for eight weeks.

The course will be taught by Dr. Anne Townsend and Dr. Harriette Wimms, Mariposa’s Chief Academic Officer and Lead instructor respectively. The course trains adults in Mariposa’s unique process for increasing social-emotional competence in children, including interpersonal and learning-related social skills, and reducing problem behaviors through a skills-based model for adult interactions.

This course offering is an extraordinary opportunity for an adult to learn how to develop and apply five key skills that can make a great impact on children’s lives. Participants will have access to numerous journal articles, books, instructor examples, role plays, Mariposa workbooks, skills application exercises, and more.

This presentation of the course – typically available only on an institutional basis – is open to the public will follow a weekly schedule, occurring every Thursday night from 5:30-7:30pm.
