Denver Public Schools And Mexicans And Americans Thinking Together Launch Free English Teaching Program

Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together (MATT) and Denver Public Schools (DPS) announced the launch of MATT Maestro en Casa (“Teacher at Home”) English immersion program to be implemented in Denver, Colorado, through radio station MARIA 1090 AM. The immigrant integration program teaches English and essential tools to help immigrants fully integrate into American society.

Denver Public Schools will partner with MATT to implement the program throughout the school district. “We are excited to be able to offer our families this innovative English-learning and integration program,” said Denver Superintendent Tom Boasberg.“DPS recognizes the importance of empowering families to become active partners in their children’s education, and learning English will help parents improve their ability to communicate with their children and also better understand Denver’s education system. We look forward to reaching at least 5,000 parents throughout the city who want to learn English.”

The program, spearheaded by Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose H. Gomez who also serves on MATT’s board of directors, is pleased that the program, highly successful in Texas, is now expanding to Colorado. “We are most pleased to know that we are serving those who most need it; Latinos who lack English language skills are less likely to incorporate into society and succeed. We are committed to working with the communities across America to see that everyone has the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.”

The program consists of six courses: Introduction; In the Workplace; Finance; Health Care; Education; and Citizenship. The lessons take four weeks to complete; are transmitted on radio three times a week; and, are supplemented with workbooks distributed for free to those who wish to take the courses. Participants will simply be required to complete a basic registration form to begin the program.

MATT Maestro en Casa lessons will be transmitted on MARIA 1090 AM beginning September 15. Participants of the program will need to tune-in to the radio three times per week: Wednesdays at 9:30 PM and Saturdays at 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM. MATT Executive Director Aracely Garcia-Granados believes that “Colorado will be a wonderful resource for parents who need to learn English. MATT is pleased with the Denver Public Schools support and efforts to implement the program countywide. Without a local partner we couldn’t be as effective in reaching the community we wish to serve. 15-year-old Rosa Constantino is excited. In less than two weeks, she will arrive in England to join a summer school programme. She has hardly any qualms about leaving her home in Naples and is already in touch with three other girls her age from across the world who are enrolled on the same English course. “I want to go to university in Britain to study veterinary science. But for that, I will need to improve my English language scores. Henley Business School and Lane4 Develop Business Coaching Programme

New research from Henley Business School and the performance development consultancy Lane4 has highlighted how team coaching is being used successfully to improve business performance – but also how much further it has to go.

The survey, ‘Coaching Teams At Work: Embryonic Yet Powerful’, reveals that almost half of the organisations surveyed (45%) use both individual and team coaching and there are some glowing endorsements of the impact it has. The top benefit is increased employee engagement at 28%. Other benefits include improved trust within the team (22%), increased productivity (19%) and more effective and innovative solutions (18%).

However, more than half the organisations surveyed don’t use team coaching, for four main reasons: managers haven’t had any training in team coaching (32%), managers don’t understand the benefits of team coaching (31%), managers don’t feel confident coaching their teams (25%) and some feel their teams object to being coached (13%).

Dr Patricia Bossons, director of the Henley Centre for Coaching & Facilitation, said that this can be overcome: “Managers sometimes perceive coaching to be something done by people outside the business to people inside the business – just as in sports’ coaching where the coach is not normally a player as well. In business however, managers are now required to be player-coaches – a role many have not received training for – this is something we need to address if the obvious benefits of team coaching are to be more widely felt.”

To address these issues and make the powerful benefits of team coaching in a business context more accessible Henley Business School and Lane4 have developed, and will deliver, a new programme, Coaching High Performance Teams, from October 2010. The partnership will leverage the two organisations’ combined academic rigour and experience of coaching teams in a business environment as well as Lane4’s heritage in Olympic sport and expertise in performance psychology.

Pioneers of the Essay Industry Split with Controversial Brand

15 years ago, Jens Schriver and Maximo Migliari, just youngsters at the time, launched an essay site with the contentious name Cheathouse.com. It instantly caused a commotion within the academic community where the assumption was made that such an initiative was unethical by nature and could only encourage dishonest conduct.

”We should have gone with the name WriteWork instead of Cheathouse from the beginning. But back then we thought it was catchy – we were just kids with no clue of what was in store for us. We’ve grown up since then and so has our business.” Says co-founder Maximo Migliari.

The essay site promptly caught the interest of the international press and all of a sudden Schriver and Migliari were featured on CNN, BBC and NPR.

As a reaction to the poor public labeling, the two founders resolved to find out for themselves whether their members actually were using the essay site for cheating.

Personal interviews were carried out and hundreds of members filled out questionnaires. The results showed clearly that a minor portion planned to use the essay site for plagiarism while the vast majority actually perceived the site as a legitimate academic resource that assisted them in finding primary sources and improving their grades.

What is more, the study showed that the minority with dishonorable intentions were mostly high school students – an interesting aspect when considering that the main audience was university and college students.

“Maximo and I are perfect examples that getting inspiration from essay examples doesn’t necessarily facilitate plagiarism and cheating. We both have university degrees and during the years we spent studying neither of us ever turned in an assignment that wasn’t original – despite the fact that we were running one of the most comprehensive essay resources in the world.” Says co-founder Jens Schriver

Since then, Schriver and Migliari have focused their resources on tuning their site to earnest university and college students – changing the name to WriteWork is an crucial step in the right direction.

Among the new features that will be appear on WriteWork in the near future is a collection of outlines for writing essays, research papers and book reports as well as a guide for citations and bibliographies.

Perth Children’s Book Week in August 2010 Encourages Reading And Creativity

The 65th annual Australian Children’s Book Week with kick off in Perth and across the country on 21August with parades and events aimed at encouraging reading.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has been encouraging the country’s youngsters to read, learn and boost their creativity for a full 65 years. Established in 1945 and run by dedicated volunteers as a non profit making organisation, CBCA also hosts a ‘Children’s Book of the Year’ award.

Children’s Book Week celebrates Australian children’s’ book and their authors and illustrators, and is the longest running children’s festival in the country. Teachers, librarians both in schools and in the municipalities and parents take part, organising competitions, story telling sessions and fancy dress parades.

The aim of the festival, slated this year for 21 to 27 August and fully supported by Australian educators, is to open the world of books to all children, encouraging reading as a hobby in order to stimulate creativity. Each year’s festival has a theme, with this year’s being ‘Across the Story Bridge’.

The series was written independently by five academics; Professor Chris Bones, Dean of Henley Business School, Professor Dominic Swords, Professor John Board, Director of the ICMA Centre, Professor Brian Scott-Quinn and Professor Peter Hawkins, Professor of Leadership.

There are several common themes that emerge from each writer’s contribution to the paper. One of these themes is the belief that there will be a renewed emphasis on sincere, genuine, transparent, values-based leadership should This means the leader needs to empathise with values that reflect the priorities of all the stakeholders; employees, shareholders, community and society at large.

There should be a collaborative nature to leadership with the recognition that one person does not and should not hold all the answers or power. There is a need for robust governance and this should be backed by corporate structures that enforce that governance.

Alexanders Continues Commitment to Students’ Well-Being

For many years, language schools around the world have been targeting those students that are taking a gap year before pursuing higher education at university or that are taking a year-off after completing their studies. Recently, however, a new student profile is emerging. The rise in the number of language schools and students wanting to take language courses has brought about a number of changes within the industry. Language schools have begun to target students of different age groups – from juniors as young as eight years old to seniors over the age of 50.

“I think the pace at which globalisation is taking place has forced people to get out of their comfort zones and explore new places and languages. This has created a new level of interest in learning languages. Though students are still learning languages at the degree or postgraduate level, many others are choosing shorter term courses that help them converse fluently in these languages”, says Teresa Anderson, a linguistic expert. Compared with five years ago, there is also a variety of customised language courses to choose from. Depending on the age group in question, the activities associated with language training also differ. For instance, for teenagers and those about to become teenagers, there are beginner sessions in foreign languages such as French, German, Spanish and Italian. Children can benefit from beginning to learn these languages at summer language camps, which are normally held in a city in the country where the language is spoken. Similarly, there are different courses for students aged 50 and above that combine lessons with sessions on wine-tasting, cuisine or culture associated with the language being taught.

“I always wanted to learn French. However, the needs of my children and my career took priority over my hobbies and interests. After retirement, I realised that I would never get a time like this to do all those things that I wanted to. That is how I decided to move to Lyon for a few months to learn French while trying out living in France”, describes 62-year-old Amy Shriver. “In addition to French courses France‘s wonderfully patient people have helped me gain confidence trying out my rusty French. For studying the French language France is very different from Canada in terms of the dialect I have heard. There is a certain sweetness to the way it is spoken in France.”, adds Shriver’s classmate, Thea Driver. Most students enrolling in language schools are still pursuing their college education. However, the increasing demand for language courses among those about to become teenagers and pensioners is helping this industry to expand.
