Students With Special Educational Needs Welcomed At ICS

ICS welcomes applications from children with special educational needs and is passionate about its inclusive approach to international education. ICS focuses on the strengths, abilities and talents of all students. In a highly diverse and inclusive setting, ICS provides a curriculum committed to reflective and purposeful inquiry. When planning, teachers set suitable learning challenges and respond to children’s diverse learning needs. Some students with special educational needs, however, have particular learning and assessment requirements that could need differentiated strategies and support for them to access a full curriculum successfully.

The teachers and the student support department take into account these requirements and make provisions, where necessary, to support individual students and thus enable them to participate effectively in all educational and social activities that take place in the school. Children may have special educational needs throughout, or at any given time during, their school years. ICS has a comprehensive policy that ensures planning, differentiation and modification of teaching and learning strategies for children with special educational needs are implemented by taking into consideration the type and extent of the difficulty experienced by the student.

The school operates an enhanced admissions process for students who are identified as requiring student support. The process operates broadly as follows: A family makes an application to ICS and informs the school, either during the initial phone call or email, at the interview or on the admissions forms, that their child has support needs. Typically, if an offer of a place at the school can be made, the family is invited to meet the director of student support and admissions so the support plan can be outlined and discussed. Once both parties have agreed the support plan and financial implications, the offer of a place at the school is made and the completion of the admissions process is actioned.

ICS offers the three IB programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged 3 to 11; the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16; and from September 2010, the IB Diploma Programme for students aged 16 to 19. It is also one of the preferred Aspergers schools London has to offer students with the condition.

Study English In London And Pay Less

Autumn is in the air. As the temperature drops, the weather is not the only thing that is changing. Our thinking is drifting from picnics in the park and summer holidays to the colder months and first days of school for the little ones. In fact, students of all ages are going back to school. For those who are planning to study a postgraduate degree or attend a university in the UK, now is the perfect time to start the preparation. But don’t the words “back to school” make us all a little nervous? Perhaps it is the idea of homework, exams, new subjects and new people. Or, perhaps it is something that provokes a cold sweat in many: tuition fees. The good news is that adult students are finding ways to achieve their academic goals in a more affordable manner.

Students can study for two years at Malvern House and then complete their final year at one of Malvern House’s partner universities, such as London Metropolitan University, Oxford Brookes University or Middlesex University. In this way, students get the same high-quality and respected degree but pay half of what the tuition fees would normally cost. With this option, quality in education is not compromised. Malvern House business courses maintain small class sizes so that students receive plenty of personal attention. They can get special assistance whenever needed. Every week, academic staff meets with students to keep an eye on their progress. School advisers are readily available when students need assistance. Malvern House offers modern, well-equipped classrooms, an academic library with all the resources students need for their studies, and a computer lab where they can connect to the internet at no cost.

Malvern House is accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC), the Association of Business Executives (ABE), and the London Chamber of Commerce Industry (LCCI). Every year, more than 6,000 adult students from more than 100 countries study at Malvern House. Students are exposed to a wide variety of cultures and ideas that help prepare them for today’s competitive global economy. In addition to two-year business and tourism degrees, university placement and university preparation programmes, Malvern House offers many other options for students who wish to study English in London.

Homeschooling: The Fastest-Growing Form of Education in the U.S.

It appears that in the U.S., homeschooling is the fastest-growing form of education, according to independent research conducted by organizations ranging from the National Home Education Research Institute (www.nheri.org), a nonprofit research and educational organization, to the federally funded National Center for Education Statistics (www.nces.ed.gov).

Let’s take a look at some of the evidence:
• “Homeschooling grew from 1.7% of the school age population in 1999 to 2.9% in 2007, a 74% relative increase over 8 years,” states Dr. Brian D. Ray of the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI).
• A 2008 study found that “an estimated 2.0 to 2.5 million K–12 children were home educated in the U.S. during mid-2008,” statistics that were also confirmed by NCES.
• Last week, in their local news coverage, Chattanooga’s News Channel 9 reported: “In the last decade, the number of homeschoolers has far more than doubled, according to the Department of Education” (WTVC-TV, August 13, 2010).

The increasing popularity of homeschooling should not come as a surprise. Homeschooling, a term referring to “parent-led, home-based education,” is now bordering on “mainstream” in the United States. In a 2008 article, SaveMoneyHomeschooling.com stated: “If homeschooling continues to grow at 7–12% per year for the next 5 years, we could see the percent of homeschooling students increase to 5 million, which is about 10% of the total children in K–12 education.” “Homeschooling high school is no longer uncharted territory . . . . There are a multitude of homeschooled graduates who are bearing fruit in the workplace, in the military, in their families, and in colleges across the country,” 9 states the Home-School Legal Defense Association, an organization whose purpose is to “defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children.”

Gena Suarez, publisher of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine, is not at all surprised by the increased popularity of homeschooling: “During the past thirty years, homeschooling families have proven that parents can do a better job than the public school—socially and academically. Homeschooling works; everybody wins.”

As the homeschooling movement continues to expand, and as graduates from among their ranks assume positions of leadership and responsibility in the United States, our nation will be watching. Most citizens would agree that our nation is in desperate need of wise, well-educated leaders: men and women of integrity, curiosity, strength, and courage. The fact that homeschooling is the fastest-growing form of education in our country may just offer our nation that hope we’re looking for.

Language Schools Are Hot This Summer

15-year-old Rosa Constantino is excited. In less than two weeks, she will arrive in England to join a summer school programme. She has hardly any qualms about leaving her home in Naples and is already in touch with three other girls her age from across the world who are enrolled on the same English course. “I want to go to university in Britain to study veterinary science. But for that, I will need to improve my English language scores. I discussed it with my parents and decided that heading to England to improve my English would be a fun way to spend the summer holidays”, gushes Rosa.

There are many international students like Rosa who are heading to London from cities across the world. Summer schools in London are attracting students not only from across Europe, but also from as far away as South America and Asia. “We begin receiving inquiries as early as February and March. The most sought-after courses are definitely English language courses. The students I counsel tell me that they are keen to spend their summer holidays in London, studying and practising their English skills”, says Lucy Gardimer, a student recruitment officer based in London. Most courses are designed to foster specific skills, including fluency in languages, leadership qualities and debating skills.

Summer schools, which run courses throughout July and August, also offer students the opportunity to enjoy the famed English summer. “At summer schools, we try to ensure that students get a break from the tedium of the academic routine that they have to endure throughout the year. Language training is given through practical exercises and leisure activities as well. Students choosing to study during their holidays also deserve a break, don’t they?”, asks Sherry Avegna, a summer school coordinator and parent of two. “There is a big demand for language courses among students attending junior schools too. Over the past three years, we have developed a number of courses for this age group”, adds Sherry. Studying at any summer school London is home to will mean that students can enjoy regular cultural trips in addition to classes.

Debut Author Covers Life Cycle of Black Swallowtail Butterfly in Inspiring New Children’s Book

In her thrilling new children’s book The Caterpillars that Grew… and Grew … and Grew, debut author and illustrator Robin Murray follows the three-year old Maddison as she explores the world through her magical magnifying glass and learns all about the amazing life cycle of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly.

When the Black Swallowtail Butterfly makes its debut each spring, seeking out colorful flowers for nectar, Maddison is able to identify it from its unique wing shape and distinctive black, yellow and cornflower blue markings. After the butterfly lays its eggs on dill, parsley, fennel or carrots, they can see a little caterpillar munch its way out of the egg and start eating. Finally, the caterpillar stops eating and find a place to spin its chrysalis, its cocoon.

And there it rests quietly, hanging by a little silk thread. Several weeks later, an amazing thing happens to Maddison’s surprise. Really close to the chrysalis, she glimpses a little head will poke out and the butterfly come into the world. Still wet, she watches as the new butterfly pumps fluid from its body into the veins of the crumpled wet wings. As the veins fill, the wings expand. Soon, a lovely butterfly stretches its black wings open and shut, practicing for its maiden voyage into the sky as wide-eyed Maddison is filled with awe and wonder about this miraculous transformation.

Pioneers of the Essay Industry Split with Controversial Brand

15 years ago, Jens Schriver and Maximo Migliari, just youngsters at the time, launched an essay site with the contentious name Cheathouse.com. It instantly caused a commotion within the academic community where the assumption was made that such an initiative was unethical by nature and could only encourage dishonest conduct.

”We should have gone with the name WriteWork instead of Cheathouse from the beginning. But back then we thought it was catchy – we were just kids with no clue of what was in store for us. We’ve grown up since then and so has our business.” Says co-founder Maximo Migliari.

The essay site promptly caught the interest of the international press and all of a sudden Schriver and Migliari were featured on CNN, BBC and NPR.

As a reaction to the poor public labeling, the two founders resolved to find out for themselves whether their members actually were using the essay site for cheating.

Personal interviews were carried out and hundreds of members filled out questionnaires. The results showed clearly that a minor portion planned to use the essay site for plagiarism while the vast majority actually perceived the site as a legitimate academic resource that assisted them in finding primary sources and improving their grades.

What is more, the study showed that the minority with dishonorable intentions were mostly high school students – an interesting aspect when considering that the main audience was university and college students.

“Maximo and I are perfect examples that getting inspiration from essay examples doesn’t necessarily facilitate plagiarism and cheating. We both have university degrees and during the years we spent studying neither of us ever turned in an assignment that wasn’t original – despite the fact that we were running one of the most comprehensive essay resources in the world.” Says co-founder Jens Schriver

Since then, Schriver and Migliari have focused their resources on tuning their site to earnest university and college students – changing the name to WriteWork is an crucial step in the right direction.

Among the new features that will be appear on WriteWork in the near future is a collection of outlines for writing essays, research papers and book reports as well as a guide for citations and bibliographies.
