Train Aid Ltd Switches To New Government Approval Scheme

Train Aid Ltd are set to become an Ofqual registered training provider from April 2013. The move will apply to all first aid at work courses that the company runs throughout the UK. The new Ofqual registration concept will replace the old HSE approval scheme. The government have now favoured an Ofqual model, which should open up the market place, and allow greater flexibility for businesses enrolling their staff on first aid courses.

The HSE approval scheme ensured that a high standard of training was maintained throughout the industry. It forced companies to externally moderate their courses, and drove out incompetent companies / freelancers. It was however very costly to implement, which no doubt had a knock on effect to the consumer. The government recognised this through the Lord Lofsted report, which concluded that the HSE approval scheme should be removed in its entirety.

From April 2013 the UK business sector will be free to choose a trainer provider from the full spectrum of the marketplace. This should have the effect of opening up the marketplace to new providers, and will allow a greater level of flexibility. It will be down to consumers to select a training provider, who they feel can deliver a reputable course. If unsure they can refer to an Ofqual approved provider, which proves their training meets a recognised standard.

Many training providers are concerned that standards could actually end up falling within the industry. The problem lies in the fact that theoretically anyone can now provide first aid at work courses and claim the content to be reputable. More and more companies like Train aid are becoming Ofqual registered to prove that their training meets a certain standard. It looks like it will replicate and replace the old HSE approval scheme. Train Aid’s Bill Casserley was on hand to provide his view point:

“Everyone within the industry was understandably concerned when the review was published from Lord Loftsed. However after having some time to deliberate over the findings I think it all makes sense. The most important people within the industry are the consumers who are purchasing the courses. This new system gives them more flexibility and will ultimately save them more money”.

If Your Child Is Ready To Start Learning To Read, Then Download The Smart4Kids App Today!

Today, Smart4Kids LLC announced the release of its new app Smart4Kids in English, an interactive learn-to-read educational game, based on a 36 steps curriculum on the Apple iTunes store.

Smart4Kids provides a structured and engaging learning experience for children ready to learn how to read.

The scientific, research-based reading materials and activities are modeled after the “Big Five” focus areas recommended by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development: phonemic awareness, systematic phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Children are challenged to learn sounds and recognize new words as they play interactive games. The Smart4Kids app contains four key components: learn, play interactive games, read stories and follow progression.

Smart4Kids enables the child to build his or her reading confidence through a progression of 36 units entailing the complete reading curriculum of a 1st grader.

Each one of the 36 units includes:
– The lesson taught
– 3 games to practice the lesson
– 1 mini-story to review the lesson

The games include activities such as word completion, word sorting, word matching, sound matching, memory tests and more. In each game, your child will win a point for each correct answer made. While the general approach is based on phonics, each unit also contains a sight word game, which are words learned primarily by sight recognition.  The sight words are also reviewed in the mini story to help your child to build vocabulary.

A certain number of points is required for the skill to be considered mastered, then your child wins an award and should move on to the next unit.

Smart4Kids was designed specifically with parents and teachers in mind.  Its curriculum is easy for you to use along side of your child.  Parents and teachers will find the interactive learning games to be a great complement to traditional classroom and home-based reading instruction. By following a standard phonics-based curriculum, you will be able to direct the child to practice within the application a specific sound that he is learning.

The App will also take the child through adventures across the globe. In six beautifully illustrated stories an international hero is introduced from a new continent where your child can imagine what it might be like to live in a different culture.  The settings for the learn-to-read challenges are taken from each of these six stories, and the international heroes are the companions of the young reader through his or her learning process.

Smart4Kids can be downloaded for free, including already 6 units. Additional units can be acquired for the price of $0.99 each, $2.99 for 6 units, or $9.99 for the complete 36 units.

Features:

•  The app follows a progression of skills, enabling your child to progress at his own pace.
•  The app can be used by up to 5 different users and track their individual progress.
•  The app uses 18 types of activities, carefully chosen according to the type of phonics being taught.
•  Voice instruction and feedback
•  Mini-stories highlight words as the narrator reads so your child can follow along
•  No third party advertising
•  No external link to social network site
•  Bundle and educational special rate

More information about Smart4Kids including the detailed curriculum is available atwww.app.smart4kids.com

Train Aid Reveals New First Aid at Work Refresher Qualification

Train Aid Ltd is set to launch a newFirst Aid at Work Refresher course in February 2013. The new qualification is run over two days, and will be held at Train Aid’s HQ in Greenwich, London. The training centre is easily accessible from anywhere in London and the Home Counties. This latest qualification is aimed at people who have already completed a first aid at work course, and who need to update their certificate. They can avoid having to do a full three days training by enrolling on the two day refresher.

It looks like this could be a useful addition to the wide variety of training courses that Train Aid provides. It is particularly useful for those candidates who hold the full qualification as this version will condense that full course down into two manageable days. The course is designed around refreshing current skills because prior knowledge is part of the prerequisite to signing up. Candidates by its conclusion receive an HSE approved certificate, which is good for a three year period.

The only prerequisite to signing up is that delegates have completed the full three day qualification and that their certificate has not expired by more than 28 days. If this is the case they can save themselves a full days training by signing up. It looks like Train Aid has designed the course around the feedback from candidates. The courses initially may not reach capacity, but will help save client’s time and money. A spokesman from the company (Steve Faber) was on hand to tell us a little bit more:

“The introduction of this course makes sense as there is always a demand to condense training down into the shortest time frame possible. This is not because people are trying to avoid it, but more so that their time and ultimately money is very important”.

Businesses are also able to benefit from the First Aid at Work Refresher course. The business sector can save thousands of pounds just by keeping up with expiration dates on certificates. Quite often companies enrol their staff onto the full 3 day qualification only because they have allowed the current certificates to expire by more than 28 days. A stronger marketing campaign about the shorter qualification could prove beneficial to the UK business sector.

New iPad App Gets Children School-Ready

Parents are preparing to send their children off to school for the first time. An Australian Mother of two has developed a way to give children entering school in this technological age a head start by creating an educational iPad app.

Rebecca Monument said that she, like most parents were aware that basic literacy skills developed in the home long before a child starts school.

“I created the app because I wanted to give my children the best of every possible opportunity,” said Ms Monument. “I was worried as my kids weren’t learning the correct way to write the alphabet, that they would have to re-learn it when they started school.”

After the application was released in October this year Ms Monument approached a local teacher for feedback. Ms Tanya Burton from Whitehouse Primary School in Australia agrees that Writeforschool is a resourceful learning tool for young children, and that the app that will complement the introduction of iPads into the prep classrooms in 2013.

“The application combines many features that other similar writing applications fail to deliver, like a variety of accents and a choice of the writing fonts taught in Australian schools” Ms Burton notes. “The large number of fonts back up what is taught in the school curriculum; it not only includes letters and numbers but blends of letters.”

The idea came to Ms Monument and she began developing the iPad application Writeforschool after her children, aged five and six began taking great interest in playing the games on her iPad.

“I thought if I could make educational game for my children, they could begin to learn to write in the cursive they are taught at their school the correct way,” Ms Monument explained. “My children love the app and its exciting graphics that can be completely personalised.”

Ms Monument hopes that her application is able to help as many young children as possible get a head start for this school year.

Manual Handling Training Courses Can Help Protect Profits

Train Aid Ltd has recently launched a new range of manual handling courses for businesses within the UK. The company started providing bespoke courses to the business sector last week, which proved very successful, and has subsequently led to the announcement that they will be rolled out to the market place in the New Year. Each year thousands of work days are lost due to people suffering injuries when moving objects. This type of training can help reduce the amount of days lost to injury, and the subsequent down turn in productivity.

Thirty eight per cent of all injuries that can cause a person to miss three days off work can be accredited to manual handling. This has led to over 1 million sufferers, whereby 12 million work days are lost, at an estimated cost of £5.7 billion to the economy. These startling statistics leave huge question marks as to whether or not enough preventive action is being taken.

Train Aid’s new course aims to highlight the risks involved, educate the workforce and reduce the amount of missed work days to business. The aim is to protect the health of employees, but at the same time also safeguard employers against medical based claims. Companies can avoid being held to ransom by individuals if they have provided staff with the appropriate level of training.

This latest announcement coincides with the recruitment of leading Health & Safety expert Joe Peter’s. He has been recruited in to sure up the whole manual handling trainingdepartment, and was even on hand to give an experts view on the matter:

“I witnessed nearly every type of work injury in my early days as a removal man. Ten years in the trade also saw me witness a lot of malpractice that sadly cut short the career of many good workers. When I switched to health & safety I realized the potential of constructive and thought out training. Many companies have reported back to me with positive feedback, and an overall downturn in the amount of revenue lost to injury”.

First Aid Courses Set To Be Opened Up To The Unemployed

Train Aid Ltd is set to offer free first aid training courses to members of the London community. This new scheme will be held on an outside setting on Clapham common starting next spring. The idea behind the concept is to try and reach out to the millions of people who have never been on such training. The recession has hit hard and many people cannot afford luxuries such as extra-curricular courses. The hope is that hosting practical led courses in an outside setting will also reach out to people who would previously have had no previous interest in the subject area.

Many communities within London have been hit very hard by the recession, and it has led to spiralling levels of unemployment. Generally people have less money at the end of the month, and subsequently cannot afford extra activities. This comes at a time when more people are being encouraged to get involved with first aid, yet offered no financial aid. Setting up a free course once a month gives people the opportunity to gain certification, and who knows it could lead to more lives being saved.

Traditionally these types of courses have been housed in a classroom environment. However this is by no means law, and therefore the classroom could be replicated in an outside setting. The plan is to help those who are unemployed, but the scheme may catch people who would have had no previous interest in the subject area. It is thought that the outside setting will invigorate people and open their minds up to learning new skills. The companies policy of making first aid training courses practical based could also add to the interest level.

The initiative was first created by Tom Casserly, founder of the company in 2009. Luckily he was on hand to give us an insight into the details of the plan:

“In simple terms more people need an introduction to first aid in the hope to save lives. In times of plenty the government may have been able to subsidize training for the unemployed. However this will not be the case for many years so the hope is that initiatives like this will provide opportunity. We can only offer a small number of these courses as we have a specific business model. However we feel this is a first, and its more than most companies will be doing”.

Train Aid To Provide Distance Learning On It’s PTLLS Training Courses

Teacher training provider Train Aid is looking to allow candidates to study through a distance learning scheme. This brand new scheme will apply to the successful monthly PTLLS Training courses that run in two locations across the capital. The distance learning option will open up affordable training options to candidates who live in neighbouring towns and counties. It is hoped that the new training style will also encourage more people to consider a change of career.

The concept of distance learning allows people to study a subject area in a remote location. Usually courses are taught at a training centre over the course of four days. This in itself can be restrictive, and prevent candidates from enrolling on courses. A distance learning scheme ultimately removes barriers and offers a greater degree of flexibility.

Distance training options have a variety of benefits for a large scope of learning styles. One of the main benefits is that it opens up PTLLS Courses to full time workers / mum’s and Dads who can’t necessarily afford to take four days off work. The new flexible option means candidates can read through and complete assignments at a time which best suits their own calendar. It also helps learners who find that they work best on their own, and at a pace which suits them. The company is looking to accommodate all learning styles, which is something that the PTLLS coordinator was able to elaborate on:

“Train Aid wants to be truly flexible with their training options, and open up courses to more individuals from a variety of backgrounds. This can be achieved by the giving people the option to study away from the training centre, but also brings extra responsibility from the training provider. In order to accommodate this we will offer live support as well as telephone and email backup for candidates”.

So candidates get the opportunity to learn on their own, but with the full support of theirPTLLS Training coordinator. There is only half a day’s contact time required whereby candidates present a micro lesson to their peers. This involves presenting a 15 minute micro lesson on a specialist subject area. By its conclusion the candidate is then ready to change their career by becoming a teacher / trainer.

Train Aid Offers Free AED Training On Open 3 Day First Aid Course

Train Aid Ltd has decided to offer Free AED training on their open first aid at work courses. The new scheme applies to the monthly open course, which is held in London and enables individuals and businesses to meet the requirements of the HSE. The reason behind the move is to enable more people to get access to the machines that can restart a cardiac arrest victim’s heart. Despite being accessible in a whole host of public locations many people haven’t had any specific training related to the use of the machines.

AED’s are one of the first tools a paramedic will use when treating a victim of cardiac arrest. In light of this the science behind them was simplified and transferred from the professional domain into the hands of the public. This means that any person in a public location can grab the machine and treat a heart attack victim whilst awaiting the arrival of the emergency services. This is crucial as for every minute that passes without an AED the casualty’s chance of survival drops by 10%.

At the present time there is no law requiring business or individuals to have undertaken AED training. This may well change, but currently training providers often include the training as an expensive add on to regular first aid at work courses. Train Aid Ltd has decided to lead the way on this front and offer the lifesaving course completely free as part of their regular courses. Training coordinator Billy Casserley was on hand to explain the reasons behind the move:

“The AED is the only known way of treating a cardiac arrest victim, yet not enough people know how to use them. In fact not many people even know they exist despite being present at all major rail stations, airport terminals and leisure centres. The time has come to get more people trained, which will ultimately save more lives”.

In the future it is likely that AED training will become part of the 3 day first aid coursesyllabus. Whilst awaiting the changes Train Aid Ltd is looking to set a precedent by enabling candidates to access the training free of charge.

Fall Festival Brings Together Holly Springs School and Big Cat Wildlife Sanctuary

The New School Montessori Center is hosting its second annual festival Friday, October 26, at its location on Sunset Lake Road, Holly Springs. Scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., admission is $5 for adults over 18, or $12 for children ages 2 to 17. Admission is free for children two and under. Free parking is available.

The theme of this year’s festival is big cats. In light of the theme, the New School’s “To the Rescue” festival is partnering with the big cat rescue and wildlife sanctuary organization, Carolina Tiger Rescue. The annual fundraiser will donate a portion of the festival proceeds to Carolina Tiger Rescue. The festival will feature an exhibit by the rescue organization, with an emphasis on conservation of these charismatic and majestic animals.

Why big cats? Children of all ages are fascinated by them and big cats are among the world’s most endangered species. The New School’s Program Director, Julie Schroer, emphasizes how the festival theme connects with the school’s mission. “We strive to foster a love of nature and a sense of individual and global responsibility in our children. Teaching them about global issues such as endangered big cats and empowering children with the knowledge they need to have an impact is an essential part of their development,” she said.

In addition to the Carolina Tiger Rescue exhibit, each class will present the results of its research into their selected big cat at the school’s booth at the festival. But at its heart, the festival is a celebration of the wonder and beauty of our natural world. “While big cat conservation is an important topic,” said Ms. Schroer, “It’s important to have a positive message to encourage interest in these beautiful creatures, so we want to celebrate big cats as part of our fall festival.” Indeed, the event will have a carnival atmosphere with live music, a magician, vendor booths, monster slides, a festival dinner, a bake sale and raffle.

Besides admission fees to help their worthy cause, the school has enjoyed sponsorship from local businesses. “The festival is a great opportunity for local businesses to show that they care not only about our community, but about the wider world as well,” Ms. Schroer said. “We are so excited by this partnership with Carolina Tiger Rescue. Every one can play their part, this is not just about the school, but about our community and its role in making a difference to create a world that is better for our children and for the wild animals that excite and inspire them.”

The Learning Genome Project unveils a new solution to personalized education through crowd sourcing

Educator Kelly Tenkely invites educators, parents and investors around the world to join in personalizing education.

Due to an increased disenfranchisement with the education system, Colorado educator, Kelly Tenkely, recognized the need for a product that would honor the uniqueness of children by personalizing learning. Kelly created the Learning Genome Project to fulfill this need.

“Every child deserves to be met right where they are in learning, rather than expected to fit a one-size-fits-all solution. In our society, we have managed to customize everything from ringtones to coffee, why should learning be different?” Said the Learning Genome Project creator, Kelly Tenkely.

The Learning Genome makes personalized learning available to children around the world by:
* Gathering information about an individual child including: their unique interests/passions, learning style preferences, multiple intelligence strengths, brain dominance, and maturation level.
* Crowdsourcing the tagging of both free, as well as premium, education resources and curriculum with hundreds of learning attributes (the ‘genes’ of learning).
* Matching resources and curriculum to students, recommending the materials that best meet their needs and creating a custom learning map for each child.
* Utilizing an open API so that schools, parents, and districts can build additional functionality to meet their specific needs.

This is the Learning Genome Project’s free “hub” that makes personalized learning available to every child.

Said Kelly, “Every child, regardless of their economic situation, deserves an education that is tailored to them. Society benefits when we help kids learn how to best utilize their unique gifts and passions.”

Premium features of the Learning Genome Project will include:
* A student information system
* An e-portfolio
* A teacher and student planner
* Blogging tools
* An e-learning center
* An individual learning map for each child

The premium features will work seamlessly with the Learning Genome hub giving students, teachers, and parents a complete solution to personalized learning.

The Learning Genome Project is seeking crowd-sourced funding through Indiegogo and will use the $85,000 raised to begin programming. The project has 45 days to raise the funds and can be found here: http://www.indiegogo.com/thelearninggenomeproject?c=home&a=1232629

In addition to her work on the Learning Genome Project, Kelly Tenkely is an educator, a prolific education blogger, and created a new educational model. This model is put into practice at Anastasis Academy, a school that Kelly co-founded that is just beginning its 2nd year in operation.

Reward Offered To Crowd Funders Who Support The EFT Project In South Africa’s Township Schools!

The Aim: To calm the violence and increase student and teacher performance in the Township Schools of South Africa.

What we do: EFT practitioners will teach the teachers of Khayelitsha’s four high and thirty three primary schools how to use basic EFT.  Teachers in turn will teach the basics of EFT to learners.

Clinical Proof of the Efficacy of EFT:  Psychologists endorse EFT – Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that stimulating acupressure points through Tapping reduces blood flow to the amygdala, which leads to an increase in endorphins, an increase in soothing GABA waves and reduced cortisol levels. The result is an instant sensation of calmness, and a dramatic reduction in anxiety symptoms.

EFT has proven to:

  • Reduce the emotional footprint of current and past trauma
  • EFT is helping Rwanda’s genocide survivors
  • Reduce disruptive behaviour in class
  • Reduce learner anxiety – resulting in significant improvement in academic and sporting learner performance.
  • Significantly improve learner performance in the areas of reading and mathematica l dyslexa.

History of the ruin of Education in South Africa: Apartheid era vs ANC era

Hendrik Verwoerd – Architect of Apartheid and the infamous black and coloured schooling policy – keeping them in their place as ‘hewers of water….During the apartheid era of South Africa, only a fraction of educational funding was allocated to Black and Coloured schools. The Verwoerdian black educational policies dealt a devasting blow to our black and to a lesser extent our coloured children of South Africa. It has set literacy back by decades.

Jacob Zuma – ANC and South African National Government President. The ‘father’ of corruption and cronyism within government and educational supplier ranks. http://www.iol.co.za/logger/p.gif?a=1.1381952&d=/2.225/2.1360Newsflash-September 13 2012 at 09:00am : Nedbank boss lashes Zuma ‘masquerade’:…The businessman said SA craved global standards of knowledge, skills development and critical thoughts. He said it was impossible to match these global virtues, though, because our schools were in crisis. To a certain extent, educational levels had declined since the end of apartheid, Khoza said. “We face leadership that has raised mediocrity to a status of virtue,” he said.

Freedom Fighter and Martyr Steve Biko said that ‘black is beautiful’ - But there is nothing ‘beautiful’ about demoralised teachers, illiterate and struggling learners.   When hearts and minds are calmed we can hold hands and hold up our heads with dignity, and together work to safeguard the education of our children.

There is only now – not yesterday, not tomorrow, only NOW! Act now – before we lose another generation of youngsters! Please, help fund a few basic tools to realise peace in this country of mine.

Auditions For The Screenwise Full-Time Diploma Of Screen Acting Open 31st August 2012

The Screenwise two year full-time Diploma of Screen Acting is the first of its kind in Australia. The Government accredited course was established in 2011 after Denise Roberts, CEO of Screenwise and renowned Australian actress (Cliffy, Mrs Biggs, Underbelly Razor, Always Greener, GP) recognised the need for a Screen Acting specific full-time Diploma course.

The diploma focuses on the particular skills and knowledge required for acting on screen, which includes post-production. It provides acting students with intense training and mentorship from some of Australia’s most elite actors, directors and casting consultants. All tutors are current industry working professionals.

On graduation, the diploma offers the students a major industry showcase comprising of a live stage performance and a screen performance presented to invited industry professionals including casting directors, agents, producers and directors who are personally introduced to the graduates afterwards. The graduates showreel, which is shot on location with a professional director, is presented to agents and casting directors at the showcase.

The diploma is comprised of 14 units of core subjects and one elective, giving students the opportunity to excel in their preferred area. The duration of the course is 1,380 hours, delivered in 20 hours per week, over a two-year full-time program.

Based on the ‘Roberts Method’, the course is a mixture of industry experience and professionalism with strong academic elements. Students are exposed to industry working professionals who are in the position to offer them the best and most up-to-date advice available. Current Screenwise tutors include award winning actors, Nicholas Hope, Anthony Wong, Denise Roberts, Terry Serio, Martin Dingle Wall, Rhondda Findleton, Gary Sweet, Road Train director, Dean Francis and multi-award winning director Peter Andrikidis (Bikie Wars, Kings Of Mykonos, East West 101).

With the decline of theatre work for actors in Australia and the increase of quality local film and television productions, acting for screen is a vital skill that all actors should develop. The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) statistics show that 85% of an actor’s career-long income will be derived from television, which is why Screenwise chose to dedicate their services to providing actors with the specialised skills to not only meet the demands of today’s Film and Television industry but also the opportunity to succeed as a reputable actor both nationally and internationally.

Applicants for the 2 Year full-time Diploma in Screen Acting must be 18 years of age or close to it at commencement date.

Auditions for the diploma course open on the 31st of August 2012 and close on November 15th 2012. Call back auditions will take place early December 2012. Late applications will be accepted subject to availability and will attract a $20 administration fee.
